About the Department:
The purpose of Auxiliary and Business Services (ABS) is to improve the quality of campus life for students, faculty, staff and the community. Auxiliary and Business Services supports the University's overall strategic plan by providing quality goods, innovative services, and strategic business partnerships that improve value, increase student success, and enhance the University's financial condition.
About the Position:
The Director of Technology Services, Auxiliary and Business Services, is responsible for supporting and/or liaising with the various operations within the Auxiliary and Business Services portfolio consisting of; Card Access and Security Operations (CASO), Technology and Services, Dining, Student Centers, EagleBank Arena, Child Development Center, Parking and Transportation, Print/Mail Services, Bookstore, Marketing & Communications, and Finance. They will also provide direct oversight of the Mason Card Office (MCO) operations and related services such as Mason ID and mobile credentials, meal plan management, and the Mason Money program.
The Director provides leadership and direction for ongoing planning, assessment, development and maintenance of all technology systems and solutions to support Auxiliary and Business Services programs, facilities, and initiatives. They leverage available resources to achieve institutional and divisional strategic goals, ensure effective process and project management, and foster collaboration and creativity to develop efficient uses of technologies to support the work of the units. The role oversees ABS Technology Services staff and works to optimize technology resources allocations that improve the student and faculty/staff experience.
The position reports to the Associate Vice President, Auxiliary and Business Services (AVP - ABS). The Director of Technology Services assists the AVP-ABS in directing all technology services and card office activities within the AVP's portfolio.

Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner with ABS unit leads and university stakeholders to define and execute the strategic goals of the departments, ensuring alignment with campus-wide IT programs/systems and the University's Strategic Direction;
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including ITS, Facilities Management, EHS, Safety Risk and Resilience, Police, and other IT groups, to achieve institutional objectives;
- Lead change management efforts for system upgrades and new technological initiatives, ensuring seamless communication, training, and adoption by stakeholders; and
- In collaboration with campus IT partners, research and propose emerging technology solutions, writing business proposals that recommend implementing innovative strategies.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional development within Technology Services and the Mason Card Office teams;
- Oversee the workload distribution for technology staff, MCO team members, and project managers, while providing coaching and mentoring via regular one-on-one performance check-ins;
- Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics for both the Technology Services and MCO teams, reporting progress and status updates to the AVP- ABS;
- Conduct weekly planning and review meetings to establish action plans and track progress;
- Execute a team-based strategy to minimize single-person dependencies for technology administration and management; and
- Mentor and plans professional development of staff to strengthen functional and technical skills.
- Ensure overall compliance with Commonwealth and industry regulations for securing data records associated with student, personnel and financial records;
- Develop and implement data analytics strategies that align with divisional goals;
- Ensure data quality, security, and compliance, including data governance policies and best practices;
- Establish seamless integration between various divisional IT systems/software, ranging from point-of-sales systems to meal plan management software, and mobile ordering platforms;
- Oversee the creation and delivery of standardized divisional dashboards, reports and other data visualizations to support decision-making; and
- Collaborate with divisional units to identify data needs and share insights, including communicating data findings.
- Develop, maintain, and communicate project plans and schedules, allocate resources, assign tasks, prioritize requirements, provide reports, and communicate progress;
- Manage a comprehensive project portfolio and conduct monthly review sessions with the AVP - ABS to discuss project performance, challenges, and strategic alignment;
- Ensure technology implementations are managed with strong project management oversight with an eye towards continues improvement and risk avoidance;
- Provide divisional strategy and oversight for hardware and software technology investments, maintenance, and replacements;
- Analyze, evaluate, and maintain methods and procedures that protect continuity of operations and promote best practices for ABS technology investments;
- Oversee ongoing development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and functional/technical documentation to support continuity of operations for technology platforms; and
- Manage compliance with institutional technology security standards for hardware and software technology deployed in the division.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with technology vendors and ensure university procurement policy is followed;
- Oversee technology contract management cycle and ensure effective planning with ABS units, Purchasing, and related vendors; and
- Manage software licenses, including annual renewals.
- Responsible for a portfolio of operating budgets, including Mason Card Office, CASO, and Technology Services. Works with the AVP -ABS and the Director, Budget & Finance to develop annual portfolio budgets/forecasts and tracks expenditures;
- Develop, manage, and marshal the Technology Services budget, including capital and recurring expenses pertaining to ongoing and future projects;
- Optimize IT spending on services, as well as hardware and software resources, to ensure the most cost-effective operations;
- Reconcile portfolio financials monthly;
- Plan purchases of IT hardware, software, peripherals, or services;
- Divisional purchaser of technology hardware, software, and other IT solutions following Commonwealth purchasing guidelines, while ensuring vendor products and services meet specifications and policies; and
- Work with Director, Budget & Finance in responding to University and state audit requests.
- Respond to emergencies within Auxiliary and Business Services facilities and as requested for campus-wide emergencies;
- Participate in Emergency Operations Group emergency preparedness exercises, response plan development, and related duties;
- Participate in strategic initiatives, to include identifying and developing new University technology programs/systems; and
- Perform other duties as assigned, as logical to the position.
- Bachelor's degree in related field;
- At least 7 years of experience;
- Experience supervising multiple direct reports;
- Experience managing both hardware and software platforms with a moderate level of complexity;
- Experience developing and deploying effective business process improvements with technology;
- Knowledge of enterprise-level systems, hardware and software platforms;
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Windows, MacOS, and Active Directory infrastructure and related tools;
- Demonstrated skills in managing technology staff in a client service centered environment;
- Demonstrated skills in managing technology projects;
- Demonstrated skills in managing complex divisional IT budgets;
- Demonstrated skills in data analysis techniques and data visualization tools; and
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Master's degree in related field;
- Experience using programming and scripting languages such as Python, SQL, Powershell, JavaScript, XML, HTML, etc.;
- Experience with Infor, Atrium, JSA, StarRez, MicroStrategy;
- Excellent communication and presentation skills and experience describing complex IT issues to senior-level management and key stakeholders, with the political sensitivity necessary to succeed in influencing the most appropriate outcome for the University;
- Knowledge of the financial, business, and technical issues in IT and particularly those related to higher education;
- A proven track record of successfully identifying, planning, leading, implementing, and managing complex projects within time and budget; and
- Experience with developing and establishing KPIs and metrics to assure accountability for departmental responsibilities.
