Project Controls Engineer
3 month+ contract
100% remote (occasional site visit in Phoenix, AZ and Las Vegas, NV)



The Project Controls Engineer provides cost control, scheduling, and analytical support for transmission and substation construction projects. This role focuses on tracking project performance, analyzing financial data, maintaining schedules, identifying potential impacts, and supporting the implementation of earned value management. The Project Controls Engineer collaborates closely with project managers and cross-functional teams to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support project controls activities for large-scale electrical infrastructure projects, including cost tracking, forecasting, and schedule maintenance.
  • Assist in developing, interpreting, and implementing project cost and schedule control standards and procedures.
  • Perform cost engineering tasks such as budget setup, forecasting, variance analysis, and change management tracking.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules in coordination with project teams, ensuring timely updates and progress reporting.
  • Conduct earned value analysis and provide insights on cost and schedule performance.
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as Engineering, Construction, Procurement, Finance, Contracts, and IT to ensure consistent project reporting and alignment with execution strategies.
  • Prepare and deliver project status reports, dashboards, and variance analyses for management and client review.
  • Identify and report potential risks or schedule impacts to the project management team, assisting in developing corrective actions.
  • Maintain project control plans, cost summaries, and financial reports to support decision-making.
  • Support staffing and resource planning activities for assigned projects.
  • Participate in regular project review meetings, providing updates on cost, schedule, and earned value performance.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives and documentation of project controls best practices.

Skills & Competencies
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in evaluating cost and schedule data.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to present technical data clearly to project teams and management.
  • Proficiency in cost control, budgeting, forecasting, and schedule management principles.
  • Strong working knowledge of project control software, including Primavera P6 and Microsoft Excel (advanced functions).
  • Familiarity with engineering, procurement, and construction processes, particularly in the utility or industrial sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple teams and regions.
  • Solid understanding of finance and accounting principles as they relate to project cost control.
  • Experience generating management reports, variance analyses, and progress presentations.
  • Capable of multitasking and managing workload across several concurrent projects.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in project controls, scheduling, or cost engineering.
  • Proficiency with project control systems and tools, including scheduling software (Primavera P6), databases, and Excel-based reporting.
  • Experience supporting transmission, substation, or large-scale infrastructure projects preferred.
