Job Title: ServiceNow Software Engineer III

Overview

The Software Engineer III provides advanced design, development, and technical direction for new and existing applications to solve complex business challenges and enhance organizational capabilities. This role serves as a principal application designer for critical system components and major enhancements, effectively leveraging analytical, technical, and leadership skills to deliver robust, scalable, and high-performing technology solutions. The position often directs and mentors less experienced team members.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform the most complex system analysis, design, and development activities for large-scale or high-impact projects.
  • Provide expert-level consulting and leadership in identifying and implementing innovative technology solutions aligned with business and strategic objectives.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of junior developers or analysts on projects of varying scope.
  • Develop and manage the technical components of project plans, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with quality standards.
  • Collaborate with development, operations, and technology teams across all phases from technical analysis to user acceptance testing.
  • Design and execute comprehensive test plans; debug and resolve complex issues.
  • Analyze and manage intricate interdependencies among applications, interfaces, and platforms.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical and functional documentation, including specifications, process diagrams, and system flowcharts.
  • Provide accurate task assessments, effort estimates, and timelines for project deliverables.
  • Maintain operational efficiency and stability of supported applications.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, or processes to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Participate in or lead vendor software evaluations and technical assessments.
  • Enforce and advocate for established development standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of supported applications, development environments, and client systems.
  • Support budget development for technology initiatives and monitor project resource performance.
  • Mentor junior team members and assist with performance evaluations.
  • Adhere to organizational risk, compliance, and regulatory standards; escalate issues as needed.
  • Promote a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as required, including participation in due diligence, cost-benefit analyses, and business studies.

Scope of Responsibilities

  • Operates with limited supervision, managing complex projects and guiding less experienced staff.
  • Serves as a technical leader and key contributor, often coordinating project activities across teams.
  • Collaborates with senior management, technology staff, business partners, and external vendors.
  • May represent the technology team on committees, special projects, or strategic initiatives.

Education and Experience Required

  • Associate s degree and at least 6 years of systems analysis/application development experience; or in lieu of a degree, a combined 8 years of education and/or relevant work experience including a minimum of 6 years in application development.
  • Proficiency in application development software, hardware platforms, and project management tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple complex projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

Education and Experience Preferred

  • Deep understanding of enterprise application frameworks and integration.
  • Subject matter expertise in supported business domains and systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with interfacing and integrated applications.
  • Strong ability to work both independently and collaboratively in cross-functional environments.
  • Demonstrated capability to manage system-wide initiatives beyond routine operations.

Required Technical Skills

  1. High familiarity with ServiceNow CMDB, Discovery, IRE, Service Mapping, and Data Certification.
  2. Strong ServiceNow architecture expertise across multiple portfolios (HAM, SAM, EA, CSDM).
  3. Solid software engineering foundation with the ability to quickly adapt to new frameworks and technologies.
