Description

SAIC is leveraging the power of Mission Integration and Commercial Technologies to enhance National Security and other critical Government outcomes. SAIC Ventures is part of the enterprise innovation team within SAIC's Chief Innovation Office (CINO). We are strategic investors in startups that can help our US Government customers solve their greatest IT, Mission, and Digital Engineering challenges. Our unique approach to Corporate Venture Capital is based on go-to-market collaboration with portfolio companies leveraging our commercial-for-government business models.

Our Ventures team are looking for a Corporate Venture Capital Principal to help source, cultivate, and manage startup investments. This individual contributor will work remotely from the west coast, and serve as our Bay Area or Los Angeles-based focal point with VCs and Startups. As an integral member of the SAIC Ventures team the Principal will collaborate with SAIC stakeholders across our CINO organization and 5 Business Groups. The Principal will develop relationships with investors and startups to scout, define & develop VC investment theses, and drive post-deal value creation with startups and co-investors. By treating our partners' offerings as if they are our own, the Principal will help to accelerate SAIC's government customers' use of novel & disruptive technologies across domains of Cloud, Cyber, Digital Transformation, Digital Engineering, AI, and beyond.

The primary role of the Principal is to both cultivate & make investments, as well as help drive those companies' products into SAIC offerings and sell-through to our customers. The responsibilities are equal parts VC & startup ecosystem engagement & cultivation, investment opportunity development & diligence to drive the thesis for new deals, and post-deal value creation that leverages the power of our CINO team and 5 Business Groups with portfolio companies.

A successful candidate will work to understand the variety of SAIC's National Security, Civilian Federal Agency, and State/Local Agency customers. The candidate will build relationships across SAIC's CINO team to engage with startups' dual-use commercial or bespoke-for-National Security technologies, and thrive based on an appreciation for technology-driven products. The Principal must have proven the capability to develop relationships with startups, co-investors, and leaders within a company. They must express an affinity for and experience working with technology-driven product & service offerings. Highly qualified candidates will have previous experience working with venture capital backed startups and understand the unique role that strategically-aligned Corporate Venture Capital investors have in the VC ecosystem. Ideal candidates will have a mix of business and technical/product experience.

Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Focal point for with west-coast based VC, CVC, and startup relationships to develop SAICs ecosystem presence including attending & facilitating meetings & events
  • Develop tech-focused market maps based on ecosystem & market insights to guide cultivation; synthesize SAIC strategies, industry data & analyses into actionable guidance
  • Cultivate investment opportunities with co-investors and with strategy-aligned startups
  • Support commercial diligence of startup investments prior to investment decision in collaboration with Ventures team and Business Group stakeholders
  • Coordinate business diligence with functional support from finance and legal to finalize the investment business case including deal terms and valuation
  • Coordinate with the General Partner and Managing Director of SAIC Ventures to develop investment theses, drive stakeholder conviction commitments, and create materials required to inform a positive investment committee decision
  • Collaborate closely with the CINO team including product sales, strategic partnerships, CTOs, and Innovation Factory teams to drive post-investment value capture
  • Act as a trusted advisor to each portfolio company for access to SAIC SMEs and the Venture ecosystem for network effect value creation, and follow-on investment syndication & support
  • Build quarterly and ad hoc reports on portfolio companies and the overall portfolio


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 6 years of experience including roles in technology or product
  • Candidates must sit in San Francisco Bay or LA area
  • Must have a passion for technology-based startups and worked at a VC, CVC, or Startup in a business/product role, or in another transactional role with a track record of venture deal support focused on Series A/B startups with priced round deal structures
  • Strong qualitative & quantitative analytical capability with exceptional communication, active listening, critical thinking, collaboration, and presentation capabilities
  • Bonus if you have an MBA, JD, or Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Double bonus if you have experience working with or for a government agency or in the military
  • Triple bonus if you have a strong network in dual-use commercial technology, national security focused technology, innovation and investment


Target salary range: $160,001 - $200,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
