Job Details

Tesla's Design Engineering Team is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer Static, Rotating & Solid Material Handling Equipment to be involved in building novel processing facilities including Tesla's first lithium refinery. The successful candidate will interface with project and process design teams for mechanical equipment design, vendor selection, bid reviews, drawing reviews, technical standard and specification development, FATs and commissioning activities to enable a successful handover of mechanical equipment to Operations.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Mechanical Engineering team, developing design scope and ensuring that all related deliverables are in compliance with the applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
  • Lead the specification, design, and procurement of static, rotating, and solids material handling equipment packages (e.g., Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Storage Tanks, Pumps, Compressors, Blowers, Silos, Conveyors, Apron Feeders)
  • Ensure compliance with project requirements, industry standards (e.g., API, ASME), and specifications
  • Review and oversee development of mechanical equipment specifications, data sheets, material requisitions, design calculations, drawings, and technical bid evaluations
  • Select and design equipment to meet project requirements, optimize performance, and ensure seamless integration of equipment with overall project design
  • Coordinate with project management team to ensure timely and cost-effective equipment delivery
  • Expedite vendor documentation, drawings, and delivery schedules
  • Ensure vendor compliance with project requirements and quality standards
  • Coordinate with other disciplines (e.g., process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, civil structural) to ensure compatibility
  • Manage interfaces with vendors, contractors, construction, and operations

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Relevant experience (10+ years) in mechanical engineering designing industrial facilities and plants or equivalent
  • 5+ years' experience as a Lead Mechanical Engineer on a variety of projects within a reputable engineering consultancy, contractor or client organization
  • Expertise in static, rotating, and solids material handling equipment, specification, and procurement
  • Excellent communication, people management, analytical and coordination skills
  • Good interface knowledge with other disciplines (e.g., process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, civil, structural) and knowledge of their deliverables
  • Extensive knowledge of International mechanical codes and standards like ASME Section VIII Div. 1/Div. 2, TEMA, API 620/650, API 660, API 610, API 673, API 674, API 686, ASME B73.1
  • Proven technical expertise in equipment design calculations, 3D modeling and FEA using industry accepted software such as Ansys, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Navisworks, Compress, PVElite, AMETank
  • Deep understanding of standardization of design procedures, review checklists and design guidelines
