Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

Advanced Energy Conversion Electrical Engineering at General Motors is a rapidly developing area in the advanced propulsion organization. We're creating cutting-edge power electronics and battery systems that provide industry-leading energy, power, and fast-charge capability for future electric vehicles. This team is critical to achieving GM's vision of Zero Emissions, Zero Crashes, and Zero Congestion.

As an Advanced Propulsion Senior Engineer in Energy Conversion, you will be responsible for the definition of requirements, execution of design, analysis, development, and testing of power converters and battery electrical hardware (i.e., dc-dc converters, chargers, HV bussing, connectors, battery disconnect unit) ensuring successful vehicle application of the component, considering hardware, controls, calibration, software, and overall integration. If you have experience in electronics, electrical systems, or both, you are strongly encouraged to apply.

What You'll Do
  • Actively pursue cost reduction, efficiency, and performance improvement on all advanced projects
  • Establish technology leadership and grow relationships with industry technical specialists, key university labs, and national laboratories.
  • Work closely with battery cell, module, pack system teams, systems software organizations, and other power electronics, control system, calibration, software, and validation engineering teams to ensure timely integration of components.
  • Collaborate across organizations to support vehicle integration and testing as needed.
  • Collaborate with and provide technical mentorship to Tier 1 / 2 suppliers.
  • Develop engineering designs and generate technical solutions for advanced hardware.
  • Perform worst-case analysis to assess design performance and robustness.
  • Participate in supplier technical reviews, DRBFM, and DFMEA reviews to ensure design compliance.
  • Develop intellectual property and document design and process improvements via technical reports.
  • Perform competitive benchmarking and component teardowns.
  • Utilize DFSS methodology as a decision tool for design trade-off activities and decision making.
  • Promote an inclusive team environment that values backgrounds, opinions, and ideas that may be different from your own.
  • For new concepts and ideas, establish fundamental learnings and develop designs through advanced technology projects (ATW).
  • Establish relationships with key suppliers and engage on development projects through Statement of Development Work (SODW) agreements.
  • Partner with the Virtual Design, Development, & Validation (VDDV) Team to utilize virtual tools which assess the performance of electrical hardware designs against program requirements.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Mechanical or Electrical.
  • 5+ years of related engineering experience.
  • Experience in one or more areas of electrification including battery management systems, power inverters and power converters
  • Previous work in the electric vehicle, energy storage, charging industry, or solar
  • Proficient in developing analytical models to inform design decisions
  • In-depth understanding of engineering principles
  • Experience in the design, development, and testing of power electronics.
  • Ability to lead complex technical projects with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to take ambiguous problems and define a tangible approach to identify optimal solutions
  • Showcase a wide range of creativity and latitude on challenging assignments
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work non-standard hours to collaborate with overseas suppliers.
  • Ability to build and present information to leadership, peers, customers, and suppliers in a clear and concise manner.
  • Available to travel to support supplier engagement and conferences.


What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in Engineering with specialization in power electronics.
  • Hands-on experience working in high-voltage laboratory and dynamometer environment.
  • Experience with CAD/CAE tools such as: SABER, MATLAB / SIMULINK, SIMPLORER, PSpice / LTspice, Altium, Orcad schematic capture.
  • Proficiency in using commercial tools for modeling and simulation of power electronics and electric drives.
  • Experience in PCB layout, plane definition, thermal and EMC optimization
  • Programming experience: Python, C/C++, Autosar Mcal.
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX / CAD Software
  • 5+ years of experience in automotive of HWIO (Hardware Input/Output) and embedded software development
  • Experience in agile process
  • Knowledge in vehicle electrical system
  • Hands-on low-level software experience
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
