Job Title: Fiber Design Technician I

Department: Outside Plant Design

Location: Remote

Job Type: Contract w/ Possible Extension

Position Summary:

The Fiber Design Technician I is responsible for designing fiber optic paths from the light source to the customer, utilizing both existing and new fiber infrastructure. This entry-level role supports the Outside Plant (OSP) design team and collaborates closely with splicers and field technicians to ensure accurate and efficient fiber deployment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design fiber routes from central office or hub to customer premises using GIS and design tools.
  • Collaborate with splicing teams to troubleshoot discrepancies between design documentation and field conditions.
  • Verify handhole locations, splice points, and other field data to ensure design accuracy.
  • Maintain accurate records and update databases with design and field verification data.
  • Work in a production environment with strict deadlines and deliverables.

Required Skills:
  • Ability to design fiber paths across various plant types (aerial, underground, new, and existing).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to resolve fiber path issues in collaboration with field teams.
  • Effective communication and coordination with splicers and other technical staff.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working under time constraints in a fast-paced environment.

Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Outside Plant (OSP) design.
  • Familiarity with fiber design databases and documentation standards.
  • Experience with GIS-based design tools and fiber management systems.
  • Knowledge of Network Manager or similar platforms is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or technical certification in telecommunications, engineering, or related field.
  • Prior experience in telecom or utility industry design roles.
  • Basic understanding of fiber optic technology and splicing practices.
