Netflix is the world's leading streaming entertainment service with 250 million paid memberships in over 190 countries, enjoying TV series, documentaries, feature films, and mobile games across a wide variety of genres and languages. This scale and experience requires a large engineering organization that collectively works together to give customers the end product they love to use.

Productivity Engineering is the organization tasked with making Netflix engineers more effective by building and supporting the infrastructure to create, build, test, deploy, run, and Observe the Netflix stack. As Netflix grows, so does the complexity behind our engineering systems. Our challenge is deceivingly simple: keep the developer experience amazing even as complexity increases. Our work impacts virtually every engineer at Netflix and enables other platform teams to innovate faster. We are looking for a talented engineering leader to join our team.

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead Netflix's observability efforts. As the "eyes and ears" of Netflix engineering, this team is responsible for implementing infrastructure and tools to enable visibility into the health of hundreds of applications that power Netflix. Thanks to the critical work of this team, Netflix is able to power a highly available system that rivals the reliability of utilities.

The Observability engineering team consists of three sub-groups: Telemetry, Monitoring, Explore & Troubleshooting. You will need to partner with engineering teams across Netflix to build tools and infrastructure that enable fellow engineers to gather timely and actionable insights to help the Netflix service operate reliably.

In this role, you will

  • Team Leadership: Hold a high bar in hiring and retention. Inspire the team toward timely execution and delivery. Ensure high and consistent velocity of output even in the face of ambiguity.
  • Technical Vision: Smartly invest in the telemetry data architecture to meet the fast-changing needs of our business.
  • Product Vision: Invests in understanding how Netflix engineering will evolve in the future and develop an iterative roadmap with product leaders to meet those needs.
  • Domain Expertise: Show thought leadership and consistent curiosity in observability engineering. Develop a productivity engineering culture that cares deeply about making fellow engineers more effective.
  • Customer Partnerships: Collaborating with customers and partners, keeping our customers up to date, driving alignment

What sets you apart

  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and architecture
  • Deep empathy and connection for other engineering teams and their business goals
  • Track record of building and leading exceptional software engineering teams
  • Proven experience coaching and developing technical leaders and people managers
  • Tenacity and the ability to balance competing priorities across multiple cross-functional partners and programs
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
