Duration: 6+ Months contract with possibility of extension
Rate: $40/hr - $45/hr on W2, All Inclusive Danta Technologies, payroll OR $50/hr - $55/hr on C2C - Corporation to Corporation All Inclusive

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly experienced and meticulous Mainframe DB2 DBA to manage, optimize, and ensure the high availability of our critical DB2 for z/OS databases. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in database design, performance tuning, problem resolution, and data management. This role involves close collaboration with DB2 Systems Programmers, application development teams, business analysts, and operations staff to support the entire lifecycle of our DB2 databases. 5-8 years of extensive hands-on experience as a Mainframe DB2 DBA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Database Design and Implementation:
- Work closely with application development teams and business analysts to understand data requirements and translate them into efficient DB2 database designs.
- Create, modify, and manage DB2 objects (databases, table spaces, tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, triggers, UDFs, etc.).
- Define and enforce naming conventions, data types, and referential integrity constraints.
- Participate in logical and physical database design reviews.
- Participate in the configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of DB2's Distributed Data Facility (DDF).
- Performance Tuning and Optimization:
- Proactively monitor DB2 database and application performance using tools like Omegamon for DB2, DB2 PM, EXPLAIN, and other performance monitors.
- Analyze SQL statements for performance bottlenecks and recommend optimal indexing strategies, query rewrites, and other tuning adjustments.
- Work with DB2 Systems Programmers to ensure optimal DDF thread management, connection pooling, and WLM (Workload Manager) policies for distributed workloads.
- Tune DB2 buffer pools, EDM pools, and other database parameters in coordination with DB2 Systems Programmers.
- Perform regular RUNSTATS and REORG operations to maintain optimal performance and data integrity.
- Database Maintenance and Support:
- Perform routine database maintenance tasks, including backup/recovery, data archiving, and space management.
- Manage DB2 security (GRANT/REVOKE privileges) in conjunction with mainframe security administrators (RACF/ACF2/Top Secret).
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex database-related issues, including data corruption, connectivity problems, and application errors.
- Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 support of critical production databases.
- Problem Diagnosis and Resolution:
- Diagnose and resolve database performance issues, deadlocks, contention, and integrity problems.
- Analyze DB2 logs, traces, and system dumps to identify root causes of issues.
- Collaborate with IBM support and ISV vendors for complex problem resolution.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work extensively with DB2 Systems Programmers on DB2 subsystem health, upgrades, maintenance, and tool support. Provide requirements for DB2 system-level tuning and new tool installations.
- Collaborate closely with application development teams throughout the software development life cycle (SDLC) - from design to deployment and post-production support.
- Liaise with mainframe operations for job scheduling, utility execution, and incident response.
- Collaborate with network teams, middleware teams (e.g., WebSphere, Java application servers), and DB2 Connect administrators to ensure seamless and efficient distributed access to DB2 for z/OS.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior DBAs and developers.
- Data Management and Integrity:
- Implement and enforce data integrity standards and best practices.
- Plan and execute data migration and conversion strategies.
- Ensure data consistency across various environments.
- Automation and Scripting:
- Develop and maintain JCL, DSNTEP2/DSNTEP4, REXX, or other scripts for database administration, monitoring, and automation tasks.
- Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity:
- Participate in the planning, testing, and execution of disaster recovery procedures for DB2 databases.
- Ensure robust backup and recovery strategies are in place and regularly tested.
- Documentation and Standards:
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for database designs, standards, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Develop and enforce DB2 best practices and standards across the organization.
- Adhere to ITIL best practices for change management, incident management, and problem management.
- 5-8 years of extensive hands-on experience as a Mainframe DB2 DBA.
- Deep expertise in DB2 for z/OS database design, development, implementation, and administration.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, DDL, DCL, and DML.
- Expertise in DB2 utilities (REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY, RECOVER, LOAD, UNLOAD, CHECK DATA/INDEX).
- Proven experience with DB2 performance tuning, including SQL tuning, index optimization, and buffer pool tuning.
- Familiarity with various DB2 ISV tools (e.g., BMC DB2 tools, Broadcom/CA DB2 tools, IBM DB2 Admin Tool, Omegamon for DB2, Data Studio).
- Strong understanding of DB2 architecture, Data Sharing, Parallel Sysplex, and DDF (Distributed Data Facility).
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex DB2 issues, including deadlocks, contention, and data integrity problems.
- Proficiency in JCL, TSO/ISPF, and REXX or CLIST for automation.
- Understanding of mainframe security concepts (RACF/ACF2/Top Secret) as they relate to DB2 authorizations.
- Familiarity with z/OS operating system fundamentals, including JES2/JES3, SMS, VSAM.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
- Experience with other mainframe databases like IMS or VSAM.
- Knowledge of IBM MQ for z/OS.
- Familiarity with Agile/DevOps methodologies in a mainframe context.
- Experience with schema management and version control for database objects.
- Certifications related to DB2 for z/OS.
