Job Title: BESS Commissioning Manager / Commissioning Manager - Battery Energy Storage Systems / Energy Storage Commissioning Manager
Location: Juno Beach, FL (Onsite)
Duration/Term: Long Term Contract
Travel: Up to 75% US travel, onsite at project locations during commissioning; remote work supporting SCADA monitoring and portfolio management
Job Description
VDart Group is seeking a BESS Field Commissioning Manager to act as the Owner s representative overseeing the delivery, installation, quality assurance, plant testing, and startup of large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems and Solar Coupled Power Systems. This includes managing subcontractors and OEMs to ensure compliance with standards such as ISO, GIA, and PPA testing.
Your responsibilities cover all phases including construction turnover, pre-energization, commissioning, performance testing, and project close-out. You will monitor and report progress, manage safety and quality control, and troubleshoot commissioning anomalies with your expertise as the primary SME for energy storage systems.
Preferred Background
- Engineering or professional electrical experience focused on power systems commissioning
- Experience with minimum 100 MWh or 5 EA energy storage systems commissioning
- Strong background in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Familiarity with SCADA systems preferred
Required Key Skills (highlighted in JD)
- Battery Energy Storage Systems installation and startup
- Deep understanding of Li-Ion batteries technical performance and integration within ESS
- Ability to create and manage commissioning processes
- Substation testing and startup, including protection and controls implementation and troubleshooting
- Experience with containerized systems, skids, controllers/SCADA, transformers, combiners
- Strong skills in quality control inspections and punch-list management
- Expertise with DC systems (0-2000 Vdc) and AC systems (480V-34.5kV)
- Troubleshooting PLCs, protection relays, inverters, Battery Management Systems (BMS) and other industrial electronics
- Proficient in control and SCADA systems troubleshooting
- Well-organized with strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Effective communication with third parties and executives
- Scheduling and project planning knowledge
- Familiarity with electrical code, means, and methods
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in safety programs and audits
- Conduct detailed quality control inspections to verify installation adherence to manuals and drawings; maintain detailed punch lists
- Perform system walkdowns before turnover or energization for mechanical completeness
- Develop and manage energization plans
- Oversee EPC and OEM commissioning procedures, ensuring status reporting and compliance
- Assist in commissioning troubleshooting as primary SME representing the Owner
- Prepare and review project closeout and testing documentation
- Report progress, indicators, and recovery plans regularly to upper management
- Interface with management committees and third parties; serve as the lead company representative
- Manage substation testing and energization, including third-party coordination
- Oversee metering testing
- Manage ISO/GIA/PPA commissioning processes
- Review all Purchase Power Agreements (PPA) and Interconnection Agreements (IA) to guide performance testing protocols
- Coordinate with Engineering, Commissioning, and Business Management teams to align on testing requirements
- Develop comprehensive testing plans ensuring contractual deliverables are met
- Lead alignment meetings pre- and during performance testing to ensure smooth execution
- Overall responsibility for test administration, data analysis, and final reporting
