Research Department Manager

Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in dynamic, international teams comprised of people with a wide range of experience and competencies to develop technical innovations for ABB Electrification and Motion Business Areas. Each day, you will conduct groundbreaking initiatives in mechatronics with a focus on mechanical and electronics developments/integrations for industrial solutions. Also, you will be able to pursue personal initiatives and entrepreneurial behavior in a challenging and rewarding work environment. The work model for the role is: Onsite This role is contributing to the ABB Corporate Research Center located on North Carolina State's Centennial Campus in Raleigh, NC. You will be mainly accountable for: Designing, building, testing, and recommending solutions in the area of mechanics and electronics applied to motors and tools/solutions for industrial applications. Acting as the primary technical contact in the area of mechatronics integration, including hardware and firmware. Bringing an innovative approach interfacing with local and external partners in achieving the best technical results on time and on budget. Challenging existing methodologies, shortening design cycles and de-risking novel technologies. Qualifications for the role

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Industrial, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of industry experience.
  • Strong expertise with hands-on approach to solve practical challenges involving mechatronics prototyping, including hardware/firmware integration, firmware development, and programming (e.g., LabView, C++). Familiarity with control systems is a plus.
  • Solid expertise in Matlab and Solidworks (Ansys would be beneficial, but not mandatory); knowledge on (mechanical) manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, additive manufacturing, injection molding).
  • Demonstrate ability to translate technical specifications into designs, project planning, required technical documentation, and reporting.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
