Job Details
A global research institute is seeking a seasoned Marine Robotics Research Engineer to lead advanced research projects and real-world trials in autonomous vessel technologies. This role will be central in shaping the future of autonomous navigation systems for marine environments and contributing foundational research to support next-generation innovations.
Responsibilities:
- Develop future-focused research strategies and guide the direction of research activities across multiple team members.
- Provide technical leadership and act as a mentor to junior researchers and engineers.
- Participate in collaborative research projects with partners across academia, industry, and government focused on autonomous marine systems.
- Coordinate cross-functionally with internal teams to support technology transfer, project planning, and production needs.
- Lead brainstorming and ideation activities in marine technology, mobility, and robotics applications.
- Conduct research in marine robotics, including perception, localization, mapping, control, and motion planning.
- Assist with technical documentation, including writing research papers, preparing presentations, and drafting materials related to technology transfer.
- Execute simulation tests and validate prototype systems in real-world marine environments.
Required Skillset:
- 10+ years of experience in both technical and managerial roles across varied domains.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience with robotics programming tools such as Python, MATLAB, C/C++, and ROS (I/II).
- Familiarity with motion planning, control algorithms, and robotic system design.
- Proven ability to solve complex and ambiguous problems in a research setting.
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities, particularly in guiding testing and research initiatives.
- Excellent decision-making, prioritization, and communication skills both written and verbal.
- Experience managing and delivering results in collaborative, multidisciplinary research environments.
- High level of engineering discipline, with strong analytical and project management skills.
- Ability to rapidly learn and apply new technologies and frameworks.
- Strong documentation, organization, and process improvement abilities.
- Willingness to travel and work overtime as required by project demands.
- Master s degree in one of the following or related fields: Robotics Engineering, Naval Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, or Computer Science.
Bonus Skillset:
- Background in machine learning, deep learning, LLMs, or AI methodologies applied to autonomous systems.
- Skilled in advanced tracking and mapping tools.
- Strong mathematical background, including system modeling, system identification, and equation formulation.
- Ability to switch between high-level conceptual research and focused technical deep dives.
Location: San Jose, CA (Hybrid, 2-3 days onsite).
Salary Range: $180,000k - $195,000k
