It's an exciting time to join Walmart's journey. We are seeking a Principal Engineer - Tax Transaction for a key leadership position within our Finance Technology organization. The Tax Transaction domain encompasses Tax Determination at stores and on e-commerce platforms, Tax Exemption, and Tax Management. These systems are critical to ensuring compliance, accuracy, and efficiency in Walmart's tax-related processes across all channels. As a Principal Engineer, you will architect, build, and enhance the core services and data flows that power our tax solutions, ensuring they scale to support Walmart's global operations. As a member of Walmart's Finance Technology team, you will collaborate with top-tier engineers and product leaders to deliver industry-leading tax solutions that support Walmart's financial and compliance needs. Our systems process billions of transactions annually, ensuring accurate tax calculation, exemption management, and regulatory reporting for our customers. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the architecture and direction of Walmart's tax technology, impacting all segments of Walmart globally. You'll make an impact by:
- Providing technical leadership and architectural direction for the Tax Transaction domain, including Tax Determination, Tax Exemption, and Tax Management systems.
- Leading the design and implementation of scalable, resilient services in a cloud environment to support real-time and batch tax processing for both in-store and e-commerce transactions.
- Partnering with product, compliance, and business stakeholders to translate regulatory requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Driving best practices in software engineering, code quality, and system reliability across the team.
- Mentoring and developing engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
- Championing automation and continuous improvement to reduce manual processes and increase operational efficiency.
- Ensuring solutions are secure, performant, and compliant with all relevant tax regulations and standards.

What you'll do...
- Architect and build Java-based services and data pipelines for tax determination, exemption, and management in a cloud-native environment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define the future direction of tax technology at Walmart.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering teams, ensuring alignment with best practices and architectural standards.
- Lead the evaluation and adoption of new technologies to enhance the capabilities and scalability of tax systems.
- Work closely with global teams, including associates in India, to deliver around-the-clock development and support.
- Contribute to roadmaps and long-term strategies for tax technology, ensuring alignment with Walmart's business objectives and compliance requirements.

What you'll bring:

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership or principal engineer role.
- Deep expertise in Java or comparable programming languages, with hands-on experience building distributed, cloud-native applications.
- Proven experience architecting and implementing microservices for high-volume transaction processing, preferably in the finance or tax domain.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or AWS) and experience deploying and operating services in production.
- Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, Event Hub, IBM MQ) and real-time data processing (Spark Streaming, Spark SQL).
- Familiarity with database technologies (DB2, Azure Data Lake) and large-scale data management.
- Strong business acumen and ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
- Extensive software engineering and platform experience, ideally in tax, finance, or compliance systems.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and tactically, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working in large, global organizations and leading cross-functional initiatives.

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00-$220,000.00
