Description

Director of Engineering

Position Overview

The Director of Engineering will lead a team of engineers in driving digital transformation and technology modernization initiatives. This individual will play a pivotal role in converting legacy systems to scalable, microservices-based architectures, enhancing technical capabilities and team performance through hands-on leadership and results-driven strategy. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in IT modernization and a proven history of leading transformation at enterprise organizations.

Key Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end digital transformation initiatives, converting monolithic applications to modern microservices architectures and leveraging cloud-based solutions.

Serve as a hands-on leader who collaborates closely with engineering teams-writing code, designing solutions, conducting code reviews, and solving complex technical challenges.

Evaluate the current state of applications and systems, recommending scalable solutions that align with business and technology objectives.

Drive metrics-based performance cultures-define, track, and report on KPIs for engineering quality, system uptime, delivery velocity, and team productivity.

Mentor, grow, and manage high-performing engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment for teams of approximately 20 direct reports.

Ensure technical debt is addressed thoughtfully by prioritizing modernization, maintainability, and long-term sustainability.

Own the road map for technical modernization, advocating for best practices across Agile methodologies, CI/CD, automated testing, and code quality.

Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, building consensus and alignment across departments.

Collaborate with Product, DevOps, QA, Data, and Security teams to deliver high-value software, ensuring security, compliance, and business continuity.

Very nice to have: Lead initiatives related to accounting applications, payment processing platforms, or financial technologies.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

10+ years of progressive engineering experience; 3+ years in a senior leadership or technical director role overseeing IT/digital transformation.

Demonstrated hands-on expertise with Python, React, JavaScript front-end frameworks, and API integrations.

Strong familiarity with modern data platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent) and Microsoft Azure cloud.

Significant experience architecting, building, and migrating solutions to microservices and modern cloud platforms.

Proven success implementing and tracking engineering metrics, using data to drive decisions and report progress.

Strategic thinker and problem solver with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Experience evaluating and modernizing existing codebases, with a strong foundation in both legacy and current technical stacks.

Nice to have: Experience in accounting, banking, or payment industry platforms.

Previous enterprise experience at organizations known for high-scale transformation strongly preferred.
