Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Web Designer with expertise in accessibility best practices and website scanning/remediation to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and optimizing user interfaces that are not only visually engaging but also compliant with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1/2.2, Section 508, and ADA.
You will collaborate closely with developers, content creators, and QA teams to identify accessibility barriers, implement enhancements, and ensure our digital products are inclusive and usable by all individuals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and maintain websites and digital interfaces with a focus on accessibility, usability, and responsive design.
- Perform accessibility audits using scanning tools (e.g., axe DevTools, WAVE, Siteimprove, Deque, Lighthouse) to identify and remediate accessibility issues.
Collaborate with development and QA teams to ensure proper implementation of accessible design patterns and ARIA a roles.
- Create wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes using tools like Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch.
- Apply universal design principles to ensure websites are usable across a range of devices and assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, magnifiers, voice input).
- Maintain current knowledge of accessibility laws and standards (e.g., WCAG, Section 508).
- Generate documentation for accessibility improvements and contribute to internal accessibility guidelines and style guides.
- Advocate for inclusive design practices across teams and stakeholders.
- Work with CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Drupal, Sitecore) to implement design and accessibility updates.
Requirements:
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Web Design, HCI, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+7 years of professional web design experience.
- Hands-on experience with accessibility compliance and testing tools.
Skills:
- Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, and familiarity with JavaScript as it relates to accessibility.
- Strong understanding of WCAG guidelines and Section 508 compliance.
- Experience using web accessibility scanning tools and browser extensions.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies (e.g., NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver).
- Attention to detail with a strong eye for design, typography, and layout.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in accessibility (e.g., IAAP CPACC, Deque Certified).
- Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments.
- Understanding of SEO best practices and their intersection with accessibility.
- Background in UX research or usability testing.
