The Principal Engineer Image Processing will apply strong mathematical and computer science skills to develop and augment advanced image processing algorithms spanning the full functional required for aviation security explosive detection systems (EDS). The Principal Engineer Image Processing shall apply his/her background in image reconstruction, enhancement and rendering to achieve continual improvement in image quality and detection capability of a computed tomography scanner used for threat detection in security while reducing the false alarm rate and decision latency. This role includes development of algorithms and code in a modeling and simulation environment as well as implementation and optimization in code for delivery with the EDS (Explosive Detection System) product.

The Principal Engineer Image Processing will demonstrate the ability to develop code for CPU and GPU processing platforms using Windows and Linux OS. He/She will also define and execute tests of image processing algorithms and analyze data to validate algorithms.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Principal Engineer Image Processing is responsible to develop algorithms for:

  • pre-processing of X-ray projection data;
  • image reconstruction with multi-energy (i.e. dual) data;
  • computed tomography 3D iterative reconstruction; and
  • enhancement and rendering of 2D and 3D X-ray images.

The Principal Engineer Image Processing will work with software programmers and physicists to design and implement algorithms in explosive detection system applications. Activities include development of algorithms and software, simulation and testing of algorithms and data analysis in support of validation of algorithms and optimization of computing methods.

Education & Experience:

  • BS or higher in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or Engineering with relevant academic or professional experience.
  • 5 years of experience developing image processing algorithms

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with real time image processing (2D,3D)
  • Experience with algorithm modeling, simulation and analysis
  • Experience with algorithm development and modeling environments
  • Experience in computed tomography, volumetric image reconstruction. Including multi-energy data reconstruction.
  • Expertise in a range of software development and CM environments and tools
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and teamwork skills
  • Highly motivated individual able to maintain focus and produce results without direct supervision
  • High degree of commitment, flexibility, self-motivation, self-confidence and assertiveness
  • Strong technology skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office suite including Visio
  • and authorized to work in the United States

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD or MS in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or other field of science or engineering
  • Prior experience developing algorithms for products that have been certified/approved for aviation security explosive detection applications
  • Prior experience in developing software with complex mathematical algorithms for X-ray imaging applications for medical, industrial or security applications
  • Prior experience with MatLab and/or other simulation tools for rapid prototyping, simulation and confirmation of complex image reconstruction/analysis software algorithms is strongly desired
  • Experience with systems and software algorithms for 3D is desired
  • System software development
  • Experience developing applications for execution on GPU platforms using CUDA or other
  • C/C++ using GCC and Linux
  • Capable of holding US Security Clearance at SECRET level
