About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to join the Government of Alberta s Information Management and Technology team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in optimizing database performance, supporting ongoing license consolidation initiatives, and implementing proactive database monitoring and reporting solutions across the GoA environment.
This position supports major initiatives focused on SQL Server cost reduction, monitoring implementation, and operational optimization across a large, complex multi-tenant database infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Build, maintain, and tune production SQL databases to deliver optimal data availability and system performance.
Develop and maintain logical and physical database structures, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance.
Provide technical expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, including installation, configuration, patching, and upgrades.
Perform database performance analysis, replication configuration, and index optimization.
Administer and maintain SQL Server High Availability Groups and backup/recovery strategies.
Collaborate with internal teams to reduce SQL Server licensing costs through consolidation and rationalization initiatives.
Implement database monitoring solutions and create Power BI/SSRS reports to highlight performance and licensing insights.
Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and capacity management.
Troubleshoot database software and application issues and coordinate solutions with development and infrastructure teams.
Create and maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, and runbooks.
Mandatory Skills & Qualifications
University degree or college diploma in Computer Science (or related discipline) with 8+ years of DBA experience in large enterprise or government environments.
Proven hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or higher (administration, tuning, and high availability).
Expertise in SQL Infrastructure Management backups, replication, configuration, and monitoring.
Proficiency in Transact-SQL, query optimization, and performance tuning.
Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and Analytical Services.
Knowledge of Power BI, PowerView, and related data visualization tools.
Familiarity with AWS RDS, Azure SQL, and cloud migration of on-premise databases.
Experience working in multi-tenancy, secure environments, including Help Desk style ticketing workflows.
Ability to pass an Enhanced Security Clearance including credit and criminal background checks.
Preferred Skills
Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and CosmosDB.
Experience working with Oracle 19c or higher.
Exposure to SQL Server licensing optimization and cost reduction strategies.
Familiarity with Power BI querying over Azure SQL.
Understanding of database automation tools, scripting, and CI/CD for database management.
Strong documentation, reporting, and stakeholder communication skills.
