Job Description
ECS is seeking a Systems Engineer to work in our Arlington, VA office / remote .
The Systems Engineer will support a large-scale federal IT modernization initiative focused on transforming legacy systems into secure, scalable, and resilient enterprise solutions. This role combines systems design, integration, cloud engineering, and technical leadership to ensure mission-critical systems meet evolving federal requirements. The Systems Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams, including cybersecurity, data, DevSecOps , and program management, to architect and deliver modern technology capabilities that improve operational efficiency, user experience, and compliance with federal standards.

ECS is seeking a Systems Engineer to work in our Arlington, VA office / remote .
The Systems Engineer will support a large-scale federal IT modernization initiative focused on transforming legacy systems into secure, scalable, and resilient enterprise solutions. This role combines systems design, integration, cloud engineering, and technical leadership to ensure mission-critical systems meet evolving federal requirements. The Systems Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams, including cybersecurity, data, DevSecOps , and program management, to architect and deliver modern technology capabilities that improve operational efficiency, user experience, and compliance with federal standards.
Responsibilities Include:
- Analyze, design, and implement system architectures for modernized federal IT environments, including hybrid and cloud-native platforms.
- Lead integration of existing legacy applications with modern technologies through well-defined interfaces, APIs, and infrastructure modernization approaches.
- Define system requirements, performance metrics, workflows, and data flows in alignment with mission and stakeholder needs.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation including architecture diagrams, system specifications, interface control documents, and test plans.
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure architectures comply with federal security requirements (e.g., FISMA, FedRAMP, Zero Trust).
- Support implementation of DevSecOps practices to enable automation, continuous monitoring, and rapid deployment.
- Troubleshoot complex system issues, root cause failures, and lead corrective action planning.
- Assist program leadership by providing technical analysis, risk assessments, and recommendations to guide modernization strategy.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, support backlog refinement, and ensure technical deliverables align with sprint goals and overall roadmap.
Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000

Required Skills
- be able to obtain a favorable DHS Public Trust suitability determination
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science , Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years in systems engineering for large-scale IT environments (federal experience preferred)
Desired Skills
- Experience supporting U.S. Government modernization initiatives or mission systems
- Working knowledge of security and compliance frameworks relevant to federal systems
- Demonstrated expertise with:
- System architecture and integration
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform)
- Linux/Windows server administration and virtualization technologies
- Networking fundamentals and enterprise infrastructure
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to work in iterative delivery models (Agile/Scrum)
- DevSecOps or automation tooling (e.g., Terraform, Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Kubernetes)
- Knowledge of Zero Trust architecture principles
- Systems Engineering or Cloud certifications (e.g., INCOSE, AWS Solutions Architect, CompTIA Security+)
- Familiarity with enterprise data management, microservices, and API-centric architectures
