Purpose of the Team: The purpose of this team is Microsoft cloud environmental, social and governance. The new era of transparency for Microsoft for data from customers and regulators. The team is working on how to deal with those requests. Looking at regulatory trends and requirements. Work with the engineering team to put documents together for the polices/white papers. Then provide them to the government affairs team to review, then it goes to the policy makers. This candidate will assist with reviewing proposals, checking websites, looking at the current pipeline. Help provide input to the government, help with building processes so management can understand. Protecting Microsoft licenses to operate data centers. Will be part of a global team for North America and South America, not required but a plus if the candidate can speak Spanish and Portuguese. Must be able to help create slides for management.
Key projects: This role will contribute to some expertise around sustainability driven or environmental regulations.
Typical task breakdown and operating rhythm: The role will consist of 50% working on deliverables for the year. Putting content together, driving the teams for input to regulatory requirements. 25% scanning and screening the regulatory landscape, so the team has the right level of understanding of what's of what's coming. The rest of the time would be participating into regulatory consultations and preparing content for senior management.

This group plans, delivers, and operates Microsoft's cloud infrastructure to bring compute capacity to over 300 Microsoft internet/web properties worldwide. The Sustainability team collaborates to enhance environmentally responsible design, procurement, construction, and operation of our datacenters globally. You will be part of the team of focused peers and have the opportunity to provide subject matter expertise to the Corporate Government Affairs team for the Americas region and state level.
You will work with subject matter experts to understand and integrate datacenter technical requirements, corporate sustainability objectives, and business strategy, to define and develop recommended positions, communications, and responses in connection with specific regulatory topics or enquiries in collaboration with other groups at Microsoft. Be ready to innovate, to leverage existing solutions, and to creatively engage an extended network of contributors and experts.
Success in this role means you have contributed to building world-class datacenter engineering and operations and have translated deep technical knowledge into clear communications that helps to inform sound environmental regulations. Key responsibilities include:
Acting as a CO+I engineering ESG regulatory subject matter expert to condense complex engineering requirements into public policy recommendations, partnering with the corporate-wide Government Affairs team in the Americas at state and country-level.
Collecting, researching, and analyzing changing public state and country-level requirements of the cloud services business and technical teams working on datacenter design, construction, operations, and innovation.
Identifying opportunities for informing and identifying potential improvements to existing and emerging public environmental policy.
Review proposed federal and state and country-level industry groups and Microsoft public policy documents for feedback to enhance leadership opportunities.
Compiling and aligning publicly available information concerning state and country-level public regulatory priorities and developing resources and tools to help internal partners understand the broader public policy landscape and trends.
Building collaborative relationships with various national and state and country-level standards bodies and industry group stakeholders to advance policy initiatives in The Americas.
Prioritizing and managing multiple technically complex assignments concurrently.
Coordinating with the Microsoft Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs group, and Microsoft CO+I leadership to ensure that ESG policies are aligned at the state and country levels as well as across the Americas region.
Make public policy recommendations and document review as required for business planning and review.

Minimum qualification:
3+ years of relevant experience in legal, regulatory analysis and advocacy, datacenter engineering, datacenter design, or deep sustainability experience in large infrastructure in the Americas and state-level.
3+ years of experience with the ability to engage externally with a complex external landscape made up of multiple environmental coalitions, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders in the Americas.
3+ years of strong sustainability background and familiarity with business, technology, economics, legal, and public policy experience
3+ years of experience in the relevant disciplines of environmental regulations and environmental due diligence at the national, state, and country-level.
Ideal candidate:
Exceptional oral and written (English) and interpersonal skills: communicate effectively and concisely with stakeholders and leaders about our programs and objectives.
Proficient at Microsoft Office products and collaboration software for virtual communications and collaboration.
Able to work independently and as part of a globally diverse team, collaborate with remote team members, and leadership.
The Ideal candidate will have environmental/ESG legal experience and an understanding of datacenter engineering and operations. They will have experience in condensing complex topics into regulatory positions for the Americas region, country and state-level requirements, change management, project/program management experience, stakeholder management skills and a high level of integrity.
