Description:

THE ROLE:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior DevOps Contractor with expertise in designing, deploying, and maintaining robust, scalable, and secure CI/CD systems that support both internal and external GitHub repositories and workflows. We are building a hybrid infrastructure that includes on-prem, self-hosted clusters orchestrated with container orchestration with GitHub workflows. This infrastructure will support a wide range of research projects within the organization.

The successful candidate for this role will lead the design and implementation of this infrastructure, manage physical and virtual systems, and ensure high availability and performance of our CI/CD pipelines. This role requires a hands-on engineer with deep experience in DevOps, container orchestration, system administration, and network troubleshooting.

THE PERSON:
Is passionate about infrastructure automation, system reliability, and developer productivity. Is a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Has a deep understanding of modern DevOps practices and is comfortable working across both software and hardware layers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Architect, deploy, and maintain on-premise self-hosted GitHub Actions runners for container orchestration.
Design and implement secure and scalable infrastructure for both internal-only and external-facing repositories and workflows.
Manage physical systems including OS installation, hardware setup, and network configuration.
Monitor and troubleshoot system performance, network issues, and CI/CD pipeline failures.
Develop automation scripts and infrastructure-as-code to streamline deployment and maintenance.
Collaborate with development teams to understand requirements and optimize workflows.
Ensure compliance with security and operational best practices.
Document infrastructure, processes, and troubleshooting guides.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Proven experience with GitHub Actions, self-hosted runners, and CI/CD pipeline design.
Strong knowledge of container orchestration tools, preferably Nomad (experience with Kubernetes is also valuable).
Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Go.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible).
Deep understanding of Linux system administration and networking.
Experience managing physical servers, including OS installation and hardware troubleshooting.
Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack).
Ability to work across teams and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Experience in secure infrastructure design and implementation.
