RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Software Engineer in Menlo Park, CA. We are looking for a Software Engineer to own the development of a Chemical Inventory and Safety System that integrates tightly with our existing LIMS and lab operations stack.
Summary:
This role focuses on building software that tracks chemical materials, quantities, locations, hazards, and safety metadata throughout their full lifecycle-from intake and storage to experimental consumption and disposal. You will work across frontend, backend, and device integrations to ensure accurate inventory state, safety compliance, and real-time visibility for scientists and operators. You'll collaborate closely with lab scientists, EHS stakeholders, and automation engineers to translate real laboratory workflows into reliable software primitives.
Responsibilities:
* Design and build a chemical inventory and safety management system integrated with the existing LIMS backend
* Implement material ingestion workflows, including barcode scanning and manual UI entry
* Track chemical quantities, locations, ownership, and status changes throughout experimental activity
* Extend existing LIMS APIs to support chemical quantity modification, location updates, and experiment-linked consumption
* Integrate with existing sample position and order-tracking APIs to maintain accurate location and usage data
* Ensure strong data consistency between inventory, experiments, and lab operations
* Automatically ingest, store, and surface hazard classifications, SDS documents, and safety metadata
* Design data models that support regulatory and internal safety requirements
* Build guardrails and validation around chemical handling and state transitions
* Build and maintain React-based interfaces
* Chemical intake and barcode-driven workflows
* Inventory search, filtering, and status views
* Location and quantity visibility for scientists and operators
REQUIREMENTS:
* BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
* 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in lab, industrial, or data-driven systems
* Strong backend development experience in Python, including API development with FastAPI, Flask, or similar frameworks
* Experience building modern frontends with React (Vite or similar tooling)
* Experience integrating with hardware or peripherals, such as barcode scanners or lab devices
* Strong data modeling skills and experience with SQL or NoSQL databases
* Familiarity with event-driven or stateful systems where data consistency matters
* Ability to work cross-functionally with scientists, lab operators, and engineers
* A mindset focused on reliability, clarity, and operational correctness
Preferred/Bonus Qualifications:
* Experience with AWS or cloud-native architectures
* Experience working with or extending LIMS, ELN, or inventory management systems
* Experience building internal tools used daily by operators or scientists
* Familiarity with chemical inventory, safety systems, or EHS workflows
* Knowledge of sample tracking, barcoding standards, and labware conventions
* Exposure to lab environments, scientific workflows, or regulated systems
The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.
We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.
Note: Pay is not considered compensation until it is earned, vested and determinable. The amount and availability of any compensation remains in Kforce's sole discretion unless and until paid and may be modified in its discretion consistent with the law.
