This role will lead and execute penetration testing operations across applications, networks, and enterprise environments. Job Description:
Apex Systems is seeking a Network Security Engineer to join a Chicago-based cybersecurity team. This role will lead and execute penetration testing operations across applications, networks, and enterprise environments. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in offensive security, hands-on experience in vulnerability research and exploitation, and a collaborative mindset to support mission-critical systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct penetration tests in accordance with DHS and industry best practices.
- Perform assessments on web applications, networks, and infrastructure using commercial and open-source tools.
- Execute testing activities safely and effectively under defined operational guidelines.
- Document findings in detailed, actionable reports with remediation recommendations.
- Collaborate with SOC, engineering, and defensive security teams to validate and remediate vulnerabilities.
- Contribute to internal tool development, methodology refinement, and team knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field with 8+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 6+ years.
- Ability to perform web application, network, and infrastructure testing using both commercial and open-source tools.
- At least 8 years of experience in one or more of the following: incident detection and response, malware analysis, or cyber forensics.
- Proficiency with at least 3 of the following tools: Kali Linux, Metasploit, Burp Suite, Nmap, Cobalt Strike, Nessus, WebInspect, Scuba, AppDetective.
- Must hold one or more of the following certifications: GPEN, GWAPT, GISF, GXPN, OSCP, OSCE, OSWP, OSEE, CISSP, CEH.
- U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in IT security, auditing, or system administration.
- Background in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
- Experience in network architecture, configuration, or troubleshooting.
