Job Description
Overview
Seeking a SQL Server DBA in the Columbus, OH area. This role will begin as fully remote, with the potential to transition to an on-site schedule of 2 3 days per week.
Position Overview
As a SQL Server DBA, you will be responsible for leading the management, optimization, and support of Microsoft SQL Server environments, both on-premises and in the Azure Cloud. You will play a critical role in driving database design, implementation, performance tuning, and reliability while collaborating across teams to ensure best practices, innovation, and operational excellence. This role involves both strategic leadership and hands-on administration in a fast-paced, multi-datacenter and cloud-migration environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, configuration, maintenance, and monitoring of SQL Server environments, including virtual machines and clustered nodes.
- Provide technical leadership in database planning, performance tuning, capacity planning, and system scalability.
- Manage cloud database migrations, especially SQL-based applications transitioning to Azure.
- Configure SQL services (e.g., security, JDBC, clusters), implement replication, and set up standby and log shipping.
- Plan and execute SQL Server upgrades, patches, and maintenance, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Coordinate with network, IIS administrators, and storage teams for SQL Server-based solutions.
- Support production and non-production environments, ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance.
- Collaborate with development teams to optimize SQL design and support application performance.
- Lead incident response and resolution, ensuring corrective actions are implemented swiftly.
- Participate in project planning, client communications, and deployment support with project managers.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, project plans, and deployment tasks.
- Identify and implement process and design improvements to optimize cost and performance.
- Provide Tier III support for complex technical issues and lead internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Conduct research and recommend database technologies, protocols, and standards.
- Oversee database security, including regular updates and patching.
- Guide and mentor junior database team members, promoting knowledge sharing and technical growth.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proven experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator in enterprise-level environments.
- Hands-on expertise with SQL Server configuration, clustering, replication, log shipping, and high availability.
- Experience with Azure SQL migrations and cloud-based database management.
- Deep understanding of database architecture, performance tuning, capacity planning, and resource optimization.
- Strong ability to monitor and troubleshoot SQL Server environments in distributed, multi-datacenter setups.
- Experience supporting code deployments and application troubleshooting in collaboration with development teams.
- Proficiency with DevOps tools (e.g., Jenkins, Bitbucket, Ansible, Maven, Nginx).
- Ability to develop technical documentation and coordinate across multiple IT disciplines.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with additional platforms such as Oracle Databases or Unix/Linux-based infrastructure.
- Familiarity with Kony Mobile and other enterprise application environments.
- Previous leadership or mentoring experience within DBA or IT operations teams.
- Knowledge of compliance, access control, and IT risk management practices.
- Understanding of virtualized infrastructure and system administration across various operating systems.
