Software Engineers perform development work across the technology stack (both front-end/back-end expertise). They are versatile in how they can add value, demonstrating the ability to manage the completion of projects that involve databases, backend services, or the development of front end applications. They should be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of emerging technologies to support the development of new solutions. Software Engineers understand the full technology stack and underlying applications, services, and databases in order to ensure optimal performance.

Costco's new Payments team is looking for a highly ambitious, self-motivated and experienced Engineer with an emphasis on cloud microservices development. This Engineer will also have experience managing various development, test, staging, and demo environments (code deployment using Continuous Improvement (CI)/Continuous Delivery (CD) pipelines, backups, data refreshes), as well as deploy and manage software into Costco's production environment while leveraging as much automation as possible.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to manage the completion of projects that involve digital payment integration in a new highly distributed and reliable application. This position will require an individual to design, build, debug, optimize and implement solutions in a fast paced environment participating and working closely with a highly motivated team serving millions of customers on a daily basis. They are responsible for continually advancing the technology in a collaborative and creative agile environment using many of the latest technologies and industry best practices and finding better and more efficient ways of delivering solutions that meet business objectives.

ROLE

Supports Principal Engineer with the design of the overall architecture of a specific product/application, applying principles that promote availability, reusability, interoperability and security into the design framework.

Performs development, optimization, and automation activities to support the implementation of a product/application.

Adopts engineering best practices to deliver higher quality and scalable solutions.

Configures, maintains, and optimizes Azure Cloud infrastructure.

Provides the team with the development strategy, solution recommendations, and estimates for a given product/application.

Participates in scrum ceremonies (sprint planning, retrospective, showcases/demos, stand-ups, backlog refinement, etc.).

Creates and executes unit tests which validate the code changes made to support the implementation of a user story.

Uses test driven development (TDD) practices to assist with the detection/recognition of software defects early in the development process.

Works with team members to move user stories from the development backlog into testing and provides clarification when needed.

Estimates, plans, and manages all implementation tasks and reports on development progress.

Designs, builds, debugs, optimizes and implements solutions in .NET, Java, NoSql, and RDBMS. The development of high quality, efficient and fault tolerant is an essential part of the position.

Delivers automation scripts and unit test automation under DevSecOps.

Performs development, debugging, optimization, and automation activities to support the implementation of a product/application.

Uses APM/monitoring tools such as Dynatrace/Splunk and browser tools to perform request purepath/waterfall analysis to identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements.

Drives engineering best practices to deliver higher quality and scalable solutions.

Participates in development and documentation of department standards and best practices, and mentor junior engineers.

Provides the team with solution recommendations and estimates for a given product/application.

Identifies deficiencies within a product/application's code base and identifies opportunities to improve overall code quality.

Demonstrates a strong understanding of emerging technologies to support the development of new solutions.

Collaborates with team members (e.g., Product Owners, Analysts) to define project specifications and release documentation for all phases of the product development cycle from product definition to design, through implementation.

Conducts peer code reviews for the software changes made by other engineers within a team.

Understands the full technology stack and underlying applications, services, and databases in order to ensure optimal performance.

Uses tools such as Azure DevOps, Terraform, Grafana, Jenkins, Azure Test Labs and Git to improve and speed up delivery of our products and services.

REQUIRED

Minimum 8 years' experience in performing API microservices development using C# and/or Java.

Strong experience with developing and running applications in a public cloud environment (Azure or Google Cloud Platform preferred).

Hands-on working knowledge of a major relational database (SQL Server preferred) and/or NoSql (Cosmos preferred).

Strong experience working in CI/CD, and designing and delivering DevSecOps automation for app deployment and testing.

Knowledge and experience working with Web Technologies using JavaScript, React.

Experience describing the solutions and generating the architecture (Logical, Physical) artifacts.

Application development in .Net, C#, Java and JavaScript.

Experience in SQL programming.

Must possess a strong understanding of the software development Life Cycle.

Experience developing within the Agile methodology.

Working knowledge of REST, Web Services, SOAP, JSON and XML technologies.

Strong knowledge of object-oriented concepts.

Strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate to both technical and Business audiences.

Demonstrated ability to execute against iteration plans and deliver assignments within scope, schedule, and budget.

Ability to work with all management levels.

Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively in a fast-paced working environment.

Must be detail-oriented and possess strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze potential future issues.

Must have high integrity, accountability, a positive attitude, and be willing to do what it takes to make the team successful.

Must be extremely responsive, able to work under pressure in crisis with a strong sense of urgency.

Responsible, conscientious, organized, self-motivated, and able to work with limited supervision.

Scheduling flexibility to meet the needs of the business, including weekends, holidays, and 24/7 on call responsibilities on a rotational basis.
Recommended

5 years' experience in:

Retail industry, retail payments and/or banking.

Payment integration across acquirers and terminal vendors.

Designing and implementing payment platforms and payment services.

Payment types including EMV contact and contactless, stored valued and tokenized payments.

University degree or equivalent education (Computer Science or related field).

Knowledge of software design patterns.

Proven practical experience operating in a scalable, high volume and high availability production environment.

Prior experience with performance analysis and optimization of web services, software and Sql/NoSql databases.

Proficient in Google Workspace applications, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.

Level 1 - $85,000 - $110,000

Level 2 - $105,000 - $135,000,

Level 3 - $130,000 - $160,000

Level SR - $150,000 - $190,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) eligible

Level Staff - $180,000 - $225,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) eligible
