Title: Laboratory Technician

Description:


R & D Technician provides support to the Chemists / Engineers in the research and development process leading to the creation of OEM coating products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Operators are trained annually (TLM or orientation) to properly manage and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous waste they generate. Site outlines how to properly handle and label hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials for our site. Our site Spill Procedure we follow in the event of an emergency from a hazardous waste or non-hazardous waste spill.

Synthesis (cooks) of polymers and resins using lab glassware and pilot units.

Preparation of pigment dispersion using lab scale mills (Dynomill, LMZ,supermill, 47P)

Preparation and evaluation of coating formulations including electrocoat, primer, topcoat and clear coat using mixing equip., various spray equip., elcometers, tukon mach., wavescan, etc...
Accurately running and recording test results for all coatings formulations, polymers, dispersions, and intermediates.
Interpretation and communication of test results using computer-based systems incl. SPC. Ability to use advanced mathematical tools such as statistics, calculus, li Documentation of experimental test results using computer programs such as Word, Excel.

Safely handle, categorize and dispose of chemicals on a routine basis.
Ability to safely load, test, filter and transport small batch materials in a plant environment. Ability to handle multiple tasks under strict time constraints
Ability to interact and communicate effectively with customers, and other client personnel. Must be able to work well with supervisor and a variety of R&D, manufacturing, and marketing people in a team environment.
Ability to train other R&D technicians.
Must perform all work in a safe manner and in accordance to all lab and plant safety regulations Perform specific analytical testing including but not limited to: viscosity, weight solids, Ph, filmbuild, tukon, FTIR, AA, Mass Spec, etc...
Recommend color adjustments to manufacturing, and field personnel, including external customers. Operate color instrumentation such as X-Rite, Minolta, and AxCS.
Maintain, repair, and operate a variety of conventional and electrostatic application equipment. Ability to travel as needed to an internal/external customer location for meetings, training, and product support activities.

EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE:

Level 5 - Two year degree from college or technical school; or 1 year related laboratory experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILS:

Level 3 - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Level 2 - Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Level 5 - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must qualify on Corporate validated Chemical Laboratory written test Must qualify on Farnsworth / Munsell Color Test
One year certificate from college or technical school demonstrating chemistry curriculum.

Qualifications:
With guidance from supervision, primary responsibility is to assist technical personnel in general laboratory operations and routine laboratory or information handling tasks in support of scientific research. Perform tasks according to accepted methods and training prescribed by the work group.
