Job Overview:

The State of Michigan is seeking a highly skilled DevOps Engineer to support the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in deploying, configuring, and maintaining containerized applications and open-source tools in a Linux-based environment. This role involves working closely with enterprise architects, application teams, and vendors to deploy solutions using OpenShift, Apache Kafka, PostgreSQL, and other modern technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deploy and manage applications within Red Hat OpenShift containers, including installation and troubleshooting.
• Install, configure, and maintain Apache Kafka and open-source SQL databases (e.g., Presto DB, PostgreSQL).
• Collaborate with MDOT and State Enterprise Architecture teams to align solutions with statewide IT standards and resources.
• Configure and maintain data sharing tools and APIs; analyze existing methods of data exchange.
• Coordinate with third-party vendors for software setup, issue resolution, and ongoing support.
• Apply software security patches and updates to remediate vulnerabilities.
• Work in virtualized and containerized environments with State of Michigan DTMB server teams.
• Troubleshoot network issues including DNS, firewall rules, SSL certificates, and connectivity errors.
• Assist agency business users with software operation, including user account provisioning.
• Develop documentation such as System Security Plans (SSP), Enterprise Solution Architecture Assessments (EASA), and installation plans.
• Recommend improvements for software tools and processes to enhance system efficiency and security.
• Support internal team members and vendors as needed across deployment and operations.

Required Qualifications:

• 3+ years of experience with Red Hat OpenShift and container-based application deployment.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience installing, configuring, and supporting Apache Kafka.
• 4+ years working with open-source SQL databases like PostgreSQL or Presto DB, including query development, connection troubleshooting, and backups.
• 2+ years working with web-based applications, consuming APIs, and scripting for data validation.
• Strong troubleshooting skills in network communication (DNS, firewalls, SSL/certificates).
• Experience with Linux OS, particularly in enterprise-level environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with shell scripting (bash) and crontab for scheduled tasks and automation.
• Experience working with state government or large enterprise IT environments.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
