Job Details

Location: Kansas City, MO
Salary: Negotiable
Description: Our client is currently seeking a Release Train Engineer! This is a 6-month contract with potential to extend and/or convert to full-time. HYBRID 3 days onsite.

Not looking for a traditional RTE (they're a dime a dozen)
  • Not someone who can just facilitate PI planning/execution and manage meetings
  • Needs someone who can lean into coaching/training into what it is to be an RTE
  • Experience as a Scrum Master, experience coaching product managers, IT managers/directors, working with them and that kind of thing
    • Reason looking: while they've been more or less a SAFe/Agile shop, they're moving away from it.
      • Moving back towards more Lean/Agile roots
        • Transition throughout 2025.
        • What this means: Org has 3 release trains, they aren't well formed, not based on value networks or value strings, based on org structures. Have a ton of cross-stream dependencies. "We're not going to call these things release trains, but we're going to ID the teams that always have to work together to focus on some kind of work"
          • I.e. Infosecurity, enterprise data, cloud computing
          • "How do we help them plan & execute as independently as possible from all of the other noise?"
          • Kind of like SAFe but much more granular
      • Shared Services currently has 22 teams, but they're not all Agile teams
    • Want someone with a diverse background who can see patterns, has coached in a multitude of different situations
    • Nice to have: Kanban, Organizational Change Management

Additional notes:
  • Needs a change agent that can form relationships, listen to what/how the different teams run (like infosec has an old PMO), and bring teams together that don't work together
  • Looking for someone who knows agile, kanban, can be cross-functional, collaborative, someone who can achieve milestones and deliverables
  • Needs someone to "stop the bleeding", keep the progress moving, and jump in from day one (no ramping up - building relationships from day one)
  • Focus is more on regulatory etc, not much agile process to that, need to implement agile into shared services (which is harder)

We are seeking a dynamic and technically proficient Release Train Engineer (RTE) to join our client's Technology Shared Services team. This role is crucial for ensuring the seamless execution of our release trains and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background and the ability to communicate effectively with cloud architects, infosec, and data architects.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the Technology Shared Services release trains, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

Facilitate PI planning, execution, and manage meetings, while also leaning into coaching and training teams on RTE best practices.

Collaborate with Scrum Masters, coaches, and other RTEs to drive Agile and Lean methodologies across the organization.

Identify and address cross-stream dependencies, helping teams plan and execute independently from other noise.

Assist in transitioning the organization from SAFe/Agile to more Lean/Agile roots throughout 2025.

Work closely with infosec, enterprise data, and cloud computing teams to ensure effective planning and execution.

Coach product managers, IT managers/directors, and other stakeholders to foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

Proven experience as a Release Train Engineer, Scrum Master, or Agile Coach.

Strong technical background with the ability to communicate effectively with cloud architects, infosec, and data architects.

Experience coaching product managers, IT managers/directors, and working with diverse teams.

Familiarity with SAFe/Agile methodologies and transitioning to Lean/Agile practices.

Ability to see patterns and coach in a multitude of different situations.

Nice to have: Experience with Kanban and Organizational Change Management.
