Location: In Office, Orange CT, Kirkwood NY, Rochester NY, Binghamton NY, Augusta ME

The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from: $125,766.40 - $157,208

Job Summary

The Principal Engineer is expected to possess a significant experience in electric transmission or distribution standards engineering and a thorough grasp of both internal/external business and regulatory issues. Be recognized as an expert in own area within the organization and industry. Maintains knowledge of leading-edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities. Able to lead a team or mentor others.

A Professional Engineering license from the State of Connecticut, New York or Maine is preferred.

The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines & 317 substations. The electric delivery system in New York contains approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines & 621 substations. The electric delivery system in Connecticut contains approximately 130 miles of transmission lines and 28 bulk electric supply substations.

Position reports to the Supervisor - Electric Network Standards and support team needs as dictated by the Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Provides specialized technical services, consulting, advice and support related to electric distribution or transmission for business projects or operating distribution, substation or transmission assets to guarantee a reliable, efficient and safe management of assets and mechanical, electrical and control systems and components. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & AVANGRID polices/procedures. Perform detailed, complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology and principles and other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services. Serve as SME and create material specifications for transmission or distribution equipment (e.g. cable, transformers, switches, poles, and concrete products). Solves or leads on complex problems and actively participates in design of new solutions or improvement initiatives. Work independently with little supervision. Participates and represents AVANGRID's on Industry associations. Mentor other employees.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required
  • 10 years minimum relevant experience
  • Professional Engineering License Required
  • Theoretical Engineering knowledge - Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Analytic, modeling & Calculation, understanding the business model; Global View of the Business (Values cross-functional collaboration, understands importance of growing knowledge and developing relationships and links across the organization).
  • Practical engineering experience/application - Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Construction, (e.g., field experience, standardization "Perform economic analyses of engineering alternatives, develop business cases and defend in front of stakeholders.")
  • Engineering documentation - Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation.
  • Ability to review and approve engineering work done by others to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment - Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and requirements.

  • Ability to devise solutions to both to common and complex problems/challenges.
  • Where appropriate, technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment.
  • Where required, knowledge of, Construction and maintenance standards in accordance with regulatory requirements and Engineering standards and specifications.
