Lead Smart Grid Solutions Engineer
At POWER Engineers - WSP, we are seeking a passionate and experienced Lead Smart Grid Solutions Engineer to join our ADMS/Smart Grid Modernization group within the Advanced Utility Solutions (AUS) division. This position is ideal for a hands-on engineering leader who thrives at the intersection of IT and OT and is driven to improve grid model integrity, operational efficiency, and real-time situational awareness through innovative technology, accurate modeling, and cross-functional collaboration.
We are looking for a customer-focused technical leader with expertise in IT/OT convergence, utility applications, and enterprise integration to support utilities in enhancing operational efficiency, outage management, DER integration, and user experience.
The selected individual may be able to work remotely or out of one of our many office locations.
About the Role:
In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring high-quality model and telemetry data across EMS, ADMS, DERMs systems, as well as some other Smart Grid Technology, enabling reliable operations and evolving system visibility. You will actively configure and validate dynamic system models, integrate DER and storage assets, support field activities, and contribute to strategic grid modernization initiatives, including dynamic line ratings and PMU integration.
You'll play a key part in strengthening collaboration between IT and OT teams, mentoring others, and ensuring operators have the tools they need to confidently manage the increasingly dynamic electric grid.

Base Salary Range: $150,000-$185,000 per year

Role Responsibilities
1. Grid Modeling & Data Integrity
- Lead development, configuration, and validation of ADMS/EMS network and SCADA models, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and operational readiness.
- Oversee telemetry and real-time data mapping (ICCP, DNP3), with a focus on ratings, impedance, and topology consistency.
- Execute and review capital project modeling updates, including topology, substation configurations, and field device mappings.
- Perform model migration reviews and ensure seamless synchronization between staging, test, and production environments.
2. Real-Time Applications & Grid Operations
- Configure and optimize key EMS/ADMS applications, including State Estimation, Contingency Analysis, Voltage Stability, and Network Security tools.
- Recommend enhancements to EMS models and application logic in response to increasing grid complexity, DER integration, and dynamic operations.
- Collaborate on dynamic line rating (DLR) projects, validating sensor telemetry and ensuring accurate line rating integration.
- Support topology optimization initiatives and evaluate new modeling strategies to improve grid observability and operator decision-making.
3. IT/OT Integration & Collaboration
- Serve as a bridge between IT and OT teams, ensuring consistent system architecture, data flow, and operational transparency.
- Participate in testing and commissioning of telemetry and control interfaces, including RTUs, PMUs, and third-party systems.
- Support integration of DERs, storage, and inverter-based resources into EMS/ADMS environments through accurate telemetry and modeling.
4. Field Support & Field-to-Control Visibility
- Support field operations with on-site or remote validation of device configuration, telemetry accuracy, and commissioning activities.
- Recommend improvements to field data collection and testing practices, enhancing SCADA reliability and commissioning efficiency.
- Ensure alignment between field asset configuration and control room system representation.
5. Training, Mentorship & Documentation
- Develop and deliver training to engineers, operators, and support staff on EMS/ADMS modeling tools, standards, and best practices.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation on modeling procedures, telemetry mapping, validation protocols, and testing checklists.
- Mentor junior engineers and foster technical growth within the Smart Grid Modeling team.
6. Industry Engagement & Innovation
- Participate in industry groups, standards committees, and vendor forums to stay informed of best practices and technology trends.
- Advocate for and help implement emerging grid technologies such as DERMS, FLISR, and OMS integration.
- Provide strategic input on grid modernization roadmaps, technology evaluations, and operational tool enhancements.
Work Environment & Travel
- This position may be remote or hybrid depending on location and project needs.
- Must be willing to travel up to 20% to support field work, site assessments, workshops, or customer engagements.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field.
- 10 years of EMS/SCADA/ADMS system support with a focus on modeling, real-time data, and application configuration.
- Deep experience with GE eTerra, Siemens Spectrum Power, Schneider ADMS or similar platforms.
- Proven ability to configure and test ICCP, DNP3, and other telemetry protocols.
- Hands-on experience with State Estimation, Contingency Analysis, dynamic ratings, and system validation testing.
- Strong understanding of real-time operations, utility control rooms, and field-to-control center data flows.
- Excellent organizational, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with EMS, ADMS, DERMS, OMS, and FLISR systems.
- Experience with dynamic line ratings and PMU integration.
- Participation in NERC, IEEE, NASPI, or utility-specific working groups or forums.
- Desire and capability to grow into a mentoring and technical leadership role.
