ABOUT
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Systems Programmer to lead the engineering, operations, and strategic planning of our IBM z/OS mainframe environment for our client that is based in Cleveland, Ohio. This role is essential to ensuring the stability, performance, and optimization of all mainframe systems, including IBM and third-party software.
As the primary technical expert, you will provide guidance and hands-on support to the applications support team, scheduling team, and data center operations. You will collaborate closely with IT leadership to define long-term strategies, oversee system performance, and ensure business continuity through effective storage, tape management, and disaster recovery processes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the subject matter expert for all aspects of the mainframe platform.
Provide technical expertise and support across infrastructure, application, and third-party teams.
Lead the installation, configuration, customization, and testing of IBM z/OS and related third-party mainframe software (e.g., TopSecret, CA-1, CA-Disk, BMC AMI Storage, Endevor, MIM, VPS).
Perform CICS administration and performance tuning.
Lead capacity planning and resource optimization for mainframe, storage, and tape management systems.
Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and implementation of storage replication services.
Evaluate and implement new technologies including Linux and cloud integration to enhance the mainframe s capabilities and efficiency.
Collect, analyze, and tune system performance data for z/OS and associated applications.
Develop and maintain standards, procedures, and documentation to support operational excellence.
Plan and execute software upgrades, system maintenance, patching, and hardware refreshes for mainframe environments.
Oversee IT service delivery and management processes (incident, change, and problem management) within mainframe and data center operations.
Ensure mainframe security best practices are applied to meet compliance and risk management standards.
Provide engineering support and documentation for enterprise scheduling tools, including user training for operations teams.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
10+ years of experience as a Systems Programmer supporting large, complex mainframe and open systems environments.
Expert-level knowledge of IBM z/OS administration, installation, upgrades, and performance tuning.
Strong understanding of IBM mainframe hardware, including lifecycle planning, firmware, and module patching.
Deep technical expertise in mainframe storage, tape management, and storage replication technologies.
Hands-on experience with CICS administration and mainframe security tools.
Proficiency in IDMS database administration and mainframe database concepts.
5+ years providing technical leadership and mentoring to infrastructure teams.
Proven experience installing and supporting IBM mainframe hardware, operating systems, and third-party software (CA, BMC, LRS, Information Builders).
Experience designing and maintaining enterprise-wide mainframe infrastructure in virtualized environments.
Demonstrated success leading large-scale infrastructure projects including architecture changes, upgrades, and global consolidations.
Experience supporting mission-critical, 24x7 operations in global enterprise environments.
