The Washington Metro Transit Authority is hiring a Manager Network Operation. This highly technical role supports all aspects WMATAs data cabling requirements, including the configuration, installation, and troubleshooting of data circuits and working with Carriers to determine best routes for cable installation and terminations. The Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all WMATA cabling requirements are successfully completed according to WMAT and industry cabling standards.

This position is vital to delivering exceptional service to both customers and employees, while driving continuous improvement in operational efficiency

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Communications, Telecommunications or Electrical Engineering.
    • High School Diploma or GED with 4 years of progressively responsible experience in enterprise voice and data network technologies, or an equivalent combination of post high school education in Computer Science, Data Communications, Telecommunications or Electrical Engineering is considered

Minimum Experience
  • Seven (7) years of experience managing union resources and managing multiple shifts to provide 24x7x365 operations maintenance support and development/enhancement project support.
  • Must include three (3) years of experience in structured and patch cabling technologies for both copper and fiber cables, including cabling for safety sensitive operations, data-center operations and business applications utilizing industry and best practices for enterprise cabling.
  • Must include three (3) years or more experience implementing, conducting corrective and preventive maintenance on outside plant 2 pair copper cables.
  • Experience with the implementation of broadband technologies such as Gigabit, Ethernet, Multiple Protocol layered switching, Session Initiated protocol and other technology schemas.

Summary

The Manager, Network Technology Operations must have a general understanding network and communication concepts: VLAN and WAN, routing and switching schemas and Public Switched Telephone networks for voice services from carriers like Verizon and ATT. This position is responsible 24x7x365 for the daily maintenance and management of the WMATA voice and data networks, and communication systems in support of WMATA and Digital Modernizations Mission and Goals. The voice and data networks include Metronet Voice and Data (wired and wireless), regional partner business networks, and private Cellular Networks. This position works closely with the Digital Modernization leadership team, functional areas, Metro Integrated Command and Communications Operations Center, Rail and Bus Operation and other WMATA business units, to ensure that all WMATA networks and communications systems are operating in a robust, reliable and secure manner on a 24x7x365 basis.

Essential Functions

Principal Job Duties
  • Responsible for the daily operation of the voice and data network, as well as the network communication infrastructure (cabling/racks/power/closets). Ensures that installations, modifications, back-ups, problem resolution and other operations are carried out in a careful and well-documented manner.
  • Adheres to all WMATA published standards, procedures and protocols for addressing or responding to any network or communication system request.
  • Provides support for trouble-shooting and re-establishing network services (voice and data) when performance degradation or outages occur on a 24x7x365 basis.
  • Assists in financial planning, performance appraisals, and other typical administrative and managerial functions associated with management of a technology team.
  • Assists the Digital Modernization Leadership in planning and designing new and upgraded services for voice, video and data network service.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Network Engineers, Integrated Communication Technicians, Chief Network Architect, Digital Modernization Sr. Management, and other Information Technology teams to ensure that each WMATA customer or department request is completely satisfied.
  • Provides management oversight and support related to enterprise class network voice and data operations.
  • Oversees the deployment and ongoing daily management of a full range of enterprise network technical voice and data systems, including the management of phone systems, data network routers and switches, and systems ancillary to the voice and data systems (voicemail, DHCP servers, etc.); circuits provided by commercial communication service providers (Internet
  • Responsible for the monitoring and performance management of large-scale enterprise networks using hardware tools and software-based network management tools and test equipment.
  • Provides support for trouble-shooting and re-establishing services when performance degradation or outages occur - on a 24x7x365 basis.
