Material Handling Engineering Manager
United States Postal Service (USPS) – Engineering Systems
Location: Merrifield, VA
Play a critical role in modernizing and optimizing the infrastructure that powers the United States Postal Service. As a Material Handling Engineering Manager, you will support USPS Engineering Systems by driving improvements across material handling engineering, maintenance strategies, and engineering support for mail processing and distribution centers nationwide. This role sits at the intersection of engineering excellence, operational efficiency, and mission impact—supporting one of the largest and most complex logistics networks in the world.
What You’ll Do:
Partner closely with USPS stakeholders, engineers, and technical teams to understand material flow, conveyance, transport, and handling requirements across processing and distribution environments
Evaluate existing material handling systems, policies, and maintenance practices, identifying opportunities for innovation, modernization, and efficiency gains
Develop and recommend cost-effective, high-impact improvements to material handling processes, packaging methods, and supporting infrastructure
Produce engineering concepts, sketches, samples, and written analyses to support proposed system designs and enhancements
Estimate material requirements, project costs, and implementation timelines to support informed decision-making
Lead and support installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities for material handling systems
Coordinate technical efforts and deliveries with external vendors and suppliers
Draft or contribute to technical documentation, user manuals, drawings, and engineering lists
Perform additional engineering and program support duties as required to support USPS mission objectives
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related discipline
10+ years of progressive engineering experience, preferably supporting large-scale industrial, logistics, or automated material handling environments
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) and relevant engineering software
Hands-on experience with CAD tools such as Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD
Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills
Additional Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods
Flexibility to work non-standard hours when operational needs require
Willingness to travel in support of USPS facilities and projects
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
