Job Description

ECS is seeking a Cloud Engineer to work in our Arlington, VA office / remote .

The Cloud Engineer will play a critical role in supporting a federal IT modernization initiative by designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure solutions. This position requires working within a highly regulated environment while driving innovation and efficiency through cloud adoption. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to migrate legacy systems, implement cloud-native solutions, and ensure compliance with federal security standards and regulations.

Working as part of a dynamic modernization program, the Cloud Engineer will contribute to transforming government operations through scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud technologies. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on citizen services while advancing cloud engineering expertise in the federal sector.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure Design & Implementation
  • Design and implement scalable cloud architectures using AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or other FedRAMP-authorized cloud platforms
  • Develop Infrastructure as Code ( IaC ) templates using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or ARM templates
  • Migrate legacy on-premises systems to cloud environments while maintaining operational continuity
  • Configure and manage virtual networks, load balancers, storage solutions, and compute resources

Security & Compliance
  • Implement cloud security best practices in accordance with NIST frameworks, FISMA requirements, and agency-specific security controls
  • Configure and maintain security groups, network access control lists, identity and access management (IAM) policies
  • Support Authority to Operate (ATO) processes and maintain continuous monitoring capabilities
  • Ensure compliance with FedRAMP, FIPS 140-2, and other federal security standards

Operations & Monitoring
  • Implement automated monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions for cloud infrastructure
  • Perform capacity planning and cost optimization analysis
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans
  • Support 24/7 operations through on-call rotation and incident response procedures
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and standard operating procedures

Collaboration & Innovation
  • Partner with application development teams to optimize cloud resource utilization
  • Participate in architecture review boards and technical design sessions
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to knowledge sharing initiatives
  • Research and evaluate emerging cloud technologies for potential adoption

Salary Range: $150,000 - $180,000

Required Skills

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust suitability determination
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science , Information Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 7 + years of experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure management, or related technical roles
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform)


Desired Skills

  • Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM templates, Pulumi )
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift)
  • Knowledge of networking concepts including VPNs, firewalls, load balancing, and DNS
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Understanding of federal IT security frameworks (NIST 800-53, FISMA, FedRAMP)
  • Current federal government or contractor experience supporting federal agencies
  • Professional cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect)
  • Experience with FedRAMP-authorized cloud environments (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government)
  • Security certifications such as Security+, CISSP, or CCSP
  • Experience with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash)
  • Knowledge of database technologies and data migration strategies
  • Experience with agile development methodologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Adaptability to rapidly changing technology landscapes
