Our Combat Mission Systems business is looking for an Associate System Safety Engineer (also known as Product Safety Engineer).

We are hiring an Associate Systems Safety Engineer to assist with our weapons systems programs, specifically munitions, launchers, and naval gun systems. In this role, you will conduct analyses that provides specialized information to support the development and implementation of balanced system designs. The applicant would analyze the designs and work directly with the design teams with a goal of eliminating or mitigating risks to an acceptably safe design solution. BAE Systems' Product Safety Engineers are involved with every stage of the equipment lifecycle from early concept through development, Integration & Test, production, and field support. Some travel would be required to support occasional test events and program meetings. Typical analyses conducted by Safety Engineers in this role include System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), Health Hazard Analysis (HHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), System Requirements Hazard Analysis (SRHA), etc. While this specific role is for weapon systems, there is the potential in the future that the applicant could work combat vehicle programs to include: the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle, Bradley Family of Vehicles, M109 Howitzers, Amphibious Combat Vehicle, Recovery Family of Vehicles.

The preferred work site location for this position is at our BAE Systems Minneapolis location (expected to relocate a short drive to Maple Grove, Minneapolis in 2025), and Sterling Heights, MI is also an option. Because this role involves a combination of collaborative/in-person and independent work, it will take the form of a hybrid work format, with time split between working onsite and remotely.

The Associate Systems Safety Engineer:
  • Uses engineering and scientific principles, logic, and defined procedures, to complete tasks in straightforward situations with supervision.
  • Performs basic engineering design, development, analysis, experimentation, test and/or product assurance tasks of limited complexity for assigned portions of a project. Ensures tasks meet cost, quality, schedule, and performance requirements.
  • Applies basic engineering design and/or analytical theory, principles, techniques, and practices to a limited portion of a technical project.
  • Develops and writes technical documentation, makes revisions to existing documentation, and provides input to technical papers or presentations.
  • Performs basic technical analysis, testing, calculations, and evaluation of results using specialized equipment and/or by computer programs.
  • Analyzes and interprets design specifications, drawings, documentation, models, and/or test results to ensure technical designs comply with applicable engineering standards, military specifications and product requirements.
  • Functions in a Model-Based Systems Engineering database with direction and instruction
  • Develops and maintains effective relations with peers and external customers to solve technical problems and implement solutions of limited complexity.
  • Acquires and maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant engineering discipline(s), industry practices, trends, and applications.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering field, ideally Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Entry level knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a relevant technical field of specialization.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Experience in technical documentation and report generation.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers to solve technical problems.
  • Due to a government contract, this position requires ship.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
The following skills are desirable, but they are not required to apply on the job:
  • Experience using MIL-STD-882 (Department of Defense Standard Practice for System Safety), MIL-STD-1472 and MIL-STD-1474.
  • Prior experience conducting analyses to include: System Hazard Analysis (SHA), Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), Health Hazard Analysis (HHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), or Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), etc.
  • Experience tracking mitigation implementation and working with the government customer to both assess and accept final product safety risk for each of the hazards.
  • Ability to evaluate software for safety impact to an overall system.
  • Experience evaluating requirements for safety impact to a system.
  • Experience reviewing and evaluating parts, installation drawings and electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Engineering experience with relevant applications in a defense environment.
  • Experience in Specialty Engineering (Reliability, Maintainability, Human Systems Integration, Environmental, or Diagnostics).
  • Experience with the design of munitions.
  • Experience in the application of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) methodologies and tools.

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $61820 - $105050

However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
