Jr. Linux Administrator

Location: Hybrid (2-3 days a week onsite); Local to Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; Chicago, IL

6 Month Contract to Hire

Pay Rate: $30-32/hr. on W2 w/ benefits

The TechOps team at one of our largest Fortune 100 Energy clients is seeking a Unix Admin to provide hands on support for the maintenance and delivery of IT solutions. The ideal Jr. Unix Administrator will work alongside senior team members to help support RedHat servers, assist with server setup and maintenance, and ensure systems are running smoothly. This position is perfect for someone with a technical foundation and a passion for learning who is looking to gain deeper experience in infrastructure support, virtualization, and enterprise IT operations. The selected IT Analyst will work under the guidance of a Sr. Unix/Linux Admin, but will be able to work autonomously and be eager to learn and grow in an agile, cross-functional environment. Requirements:

  • Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 1 3 years of experience in a Linux/Unix support role (RedHat preferred).
  • Familiarity with virtualized environments (e.g., VMware vSphere).
  • Basic knowledge of server configuration, patching, and backups.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic server performance or connectivity issues.
  • Willingness to learn and grow within a large-scale IT environment.
  • Good communication skills and comfort working with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to follow documented processes and work under supervision.

Your Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist with managing RedHat Linux servers (versions 6 9) in a physical and virtual environment.
  • Support basic server tasks including monitoring, patching, and backup checks.
  • Help maintain inventory and configuration documentation.
  • Learn and assist with change management processes for IT infrastructure.
  • Participate in hardware setup (racking/stacking servers) with guidance.
  • Monitor system health and escalate issues as needed.
  • Help track and document recurring issues or tasks.
  • Contribute to the automation of repetitive tasks where possible.
  • Collaborate with IT and business users to ensure service availability and responsiveness.
  • Stay current with new technologies and assist with ongoing improvements.
  • Participate in after-hours support rotations under mentorship from senior team members.

Preferred Experience:

  • Exposure to VMware vSphere or other virtualization technologies.
  • Experience with scripting (Bash, Python, or Shell).
  • Basic understanding of cloud platforms (Azure or Oracle Cloud).
  • Familiarity with data center operations or server hardware.
  • Certifications such as RHCSA, CompTIA Linux+, or VMware are a plus.
