Job Title: Data Scientist

Data Scientist with strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, qualified to handle all aspects of a project ranging from raw data cleansing/linking and basic descriptive analysis to developing predictive models and evaluating the effects of public policies. As a vital member of our data analytics team, you will support the creation of integrated datasets, analyze large, complex justice system datasets, create insightful visualizations, and contribute to our Transforming Siloed Data into Justice System Insights initiative. Responsibilities:
Data Preparation, Exploration, and Collaboration
- Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) to assess the structure, completeness, and quality of datasets before analysis
- Document data sources, transformations, and assumptions to ensure reproducibility and transparency in analysis
- Work closely with data integration specialists, engineers, and analysts to standardize, transform, link, clean, merge, and match large and complex datasets across siloed justice software systems
- Actively participate in team discussions and contribute to decision-making to ensure data strategies are well-integrated and aligned with overall project objectives
Data Analysis, Interpretation, and Documentation
- Analyze large, complex justice system datasets in collaboration with team members
- Identify trends, patterns, and anomalies, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of justice-related data
- Maintain clear documentation of datasets, analyses, and methodologies to support long-term usability
- Build and rigorously evaluate statistical models when appropriate, using best practices of traditional statistical analysis as well as machine learning and statistical inference techniques
- Prepare project memos, summaries, presentations, reports, and other work products for dissemination to policymakers, academic researchers, and other stakeholders
Visualization Creation and Storytelling
- Utilize advanced visualization tools and programming languages to create effective and insightful visual representations of data
- Develop interactive dashboards to facilitate the exploration and understanding of justice-related data
- Craft compelling narratives and communicate insights effectively to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of a bachelor's/master s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in data science and analytics
Technical Skills:
Candidates for the Data Scientist position must possess knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Data Exploration and Documentation Strong ability to conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA), assess data quality, and document findings for reproducibility
- Data Manipulation Skilled in cleaning, transforming, merging, and matching large and complex datasets across different platforms and systems
- Programming Languages Proficient in Python and R for advanced data analysis; familiarity with libraries such as Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, and D3.js for visualization
- Database Management Intermediate knowledge and practical skills in SQL for managing and querying databases
- Statistical Analysis and Modeling Strong understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning, data mining, and the use of statistical analysis tools (though modeling is only one aspect of this role)
- Data Visualization Tools Experienced with business intelligence tools like Power BI and Tableau for creating dynamic dashboards and visual representations of data
Non-Technical Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to craft compelling narratives and present complex data insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Capable of working effectively in a highly collaborative environment, engaging with data integration specialists, engineers, scientists, analysts, and domain experts
- Solid analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, capable of tackling complex data-related issues and contributing to project strategies and solutions
