Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer II will contribute to the design, simulation, prototyping, and testing of advanced mechanical components and assemblies that drive the performance, reliability, and usability of our products. You'll take ownership of engineering tasks and collaborate with a multidisciplinary R&D team to develop precision mechanical subsystems for cryogenic and vacuum-based instrumentation. This role supports new product introductions, custom development, and sustaining engineering efforts, with a focus on innovation, integration, and quality.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Expectations

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and subsystems

  • Take ownership of engineering tasks across the full development cycle-from concept and simulation to prototyping, testing, and release

  • Create and release engineering drawings, reports, and presentations to support product development and manufacturing

  • Conduct analysis, build prototypes, develop test plans, and perform validation testing to ensure performance and reliability

  • Collaborate with electrical, software, firmware, and manufacturing engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs into complex systems

  • Work closely with manufacturing and project management to communicate needs, resolve roadblocks, and align work with company priorities

  • Manage development of mechanical subsystems and lead projects when required

  • Participate in technical design reviews, providing feedback to enhance quality, manufacturability, and performance

  • Balance long-term engineering goals with short-term project deliverables in a fast-paced, dynamic R&D environment

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in mechanical design, simulation, and precision instrumentation

Minimum Qualifications (Experience / Education)

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering

  • 2-5 years experience in mechanical design and product development

Competencies // Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's)

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles including mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science, with the ability to apply them effectively

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), including modeling, assemblies, and drawing creation

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and manufacturability

  • Effective communication skills, capable of articulating technical concepts across multidisciplinary teams

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and contribute to project deliverables in a fast-paced environment

  • Action-oriented self-starter with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement

  • Knowledge of mechanical drawing standards (e.g., ASME Y14) and best practices for manufacturing parts and assemblies

  • Familiarity with ERP systems and understanding of engineering-manufacturing workflows

  • Exposure to cross-disciplinary integration and systems-level thinking

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with vacuum and/or cryogenic systems

  • Experience with vibrations design and analysis

  • Hands-on experience in machine shop environment, including familiarity with machining processes, tolerances, and fabrication techniques

  • Exposure to simulation tools such as FEA for mechanical performance validation

  • Experience developing mechanical systems for scientific instruments or high-precision applications

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds as part of the essential job duties. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the role.
