The Role:

The selected Low Voltage (12/48V) Motor Technical Specialist (LVM TS) will drive innovation and work to commonize technical solutions and leverage volumes cross-subsystems, cross-organizations and cross-suppliers to reduce cost, mass and complexity, while improving quality, fuel economy and EV range, and reducing the carbon footprint or CO2 emissions through efficient and properly selected electric motors. This work is in support of the growing industry demands in the areas of CO2 reduction, EV range improvements, optimized and efficient EP vehicle loads, and improved QRD performance supporting GM's Zero-Crashes, Zero-Emissions and Zero-Congestion vision.

What You'll do:
  • Develop and manage strategic direction of non-propulsion electric motors for various subsystems/applications across automotive subsystems
  • Convert strategic direction into actionable tactical plans through planning, definition and development of deployable innovative electric motor technology into various automotive subsystems
  • Engineer technical solutions for current and new programs related to electric motors
  • Support the development of future strategy and roadmaps for electric motors, as appropriate
  • Lead Motor Initiatives across various SMTs and work across organizations including sourcing support for electric motors in various 12V sub-systems
  • Lead and support cross-SMT application engineers with execution of global strategy in an advisory role
  • Support the generation, development, implementation and evaluation of new electric motor feature concepts as appropriate
  • Develop technical specifications for electric motors and actuators based on feature requirements
  • Drive commonization of motor applications by studying the supplier motor portfolio and their BOM composition to reuse standalone motor or parts within the motor assembly across applications
  • Collaborate with purchasing and teardown specialist to ensure motor cost estimation strategy internal to GM is following supplier cost strategy
  • Collaborate with electric power organization to optimize power consumption strategies for motor applications and reduce the load on charging system components
  • Participate in resolution of field issues related to electric motors and actuators, determine root causes and recommend appropriate course of action
  • Provide leadership and support to product development teams as an advocate for electric motor technology integration with related suppliers
  • Work with the Purchasing organization to assess motor supplier capabilities
  • Lead motor supplier development activities including supplier technical reviews
  • Develop and administer technical evaluations of motor suppliers and motors cross SMT.
  • Develop preferred motor suppliers list for Cross SMT applications
  • Review Interface Control Design (ICD) strategy and ICD templates
  • Stay abreast of advanced electric brushed and brushless motor technologies and competitive products to integrate low cost, efficient electromechanical motors into GM systems
  • Travel to motor suppliers engineering and manufacturing locations


Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree
  • Minimum of 5+ year of relevant engineering experience
  • 3+ years automotive experience
  • Knowledge of automotive sub-systems with low voltage electric motors
  • Knowledge of electromechanical design and operating principles and performance characteristics of DC brushed and brushless motors for automotive applications
  • Understanding of power electronic circuitry and control techniques used for DC brush/ brushless motors speed and torque control
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • High level of competence in writing and comprehending requirements
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Ability to engineer/manage multiple and significantly complex projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results
  • Ability to seek and integrate knowledge from diverse sources required to perform the tasks
  • High levels of initiative and proactivity
  • Ability to communicate ideas, plans, and results effectively via presentations and written reports
  • Work effectively with peers, management, operations groups, and outside organizations


What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
  • MSEE with focus in Electric Machines drives preferred
  • Experience in performing system and component level DFMEAs
  • Knowledge of Electromagnetic FEA analysis of electric machines
  • Knowledge of Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) and REE requirements
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability and low-cost manufacturing of electric motors
  • Working knowledge of automotive component and system level test plans, including EMC testing.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the state of the art of CAE tools, and methods for electromagnetic, thermal and durability analysis and testing of mechatronic systems
  • Knowledge of Ansys, Matlab and Simulink electrical simulations
  • Experience with DNG, Jira, motor controls.
  • Good analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex.
  • Proactive study sense, Structural and forward thinking, teamwork spirit.
  • Good interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
