This position will lead (hands on) a comprehensive current state assessment of GTRI s data warehouse environment, including data sources, pipelines (ETL/ELT), and storage layers (staging, data stores, data marts) and deliver a gap analysis using industry maturity models.

The analysis will identify improvement areas across people, processes, and technology, and include recommended strategies for modernizing the data architecture.

The architect will also assess current GTRI data inventories such as master/reference data, data dictionaries, standards, and metadata policies.

IMPACT & INFLUENCE:

This position will interact consistently with GTRI management and personnel, as well as external service providers and Georgia Tech (GT) campus units.

The role serves as a strategic advisor to the GTRI Enterprise Systems Department (ESD) Director of Data Management & Services on data architecture modernization, maturity assessment, and data governance/stewardship best practices.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Source systems

ETL/ELT pipelines (e.g., IBM DataStage)

Data staging, operational data stores, and data marts

Conduct a gap analysis based on industry-standard data architecture maturity models (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK, TDWI, Gartner).

Develop actionable recommendations across people, processes, and technologies to evolve the data environment toward greater scalability, automation, quality, and governance.

Create and implement short-term and long-term data strategy roadmaps aligned with GTRI strategic initiatives.

Maintain and evolve reference architectures for current, transitional, and future states of the enterprise data platform.

Design enterprise-level conceptual and logical data models and flow diagrams.

Recommend modern data platform technologies (e.g., cloud-based data warehouses, data lakehouses).

Collaborate with ETL, database, reporting, and security teams to ensure data integration, access control, and data quality practices are effective and scalable.

Integrate data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Cognos) with Oracle databases, IBM DataStage, and other platforms.

Support enterprise information governance, including metadata management, classification, sensitivity analysis, and compliance with privacy/security standards.

Qualifications:

10+ years of experience architecting on-prem and cloud-based enterprise data solutions.

Demonstrated experience leading a current state assessment and maturity gap analysis of a data warehouse or enterprise data platform, including recommendations and implementation planning.

Proven expertise in designing and delivering enterprise data warehouse, analytics, and business intelligence solutions.

Strong knowledge of data architecture models (conceptual, logical, physical) and industry maturity frameworks.

Experience developing data governance and metadata management practices aligned with enterprise frameworks.

Familiarity with BI and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, Cognos).

Experience with ETL platforms (especially IBM DataStage), integration tools (e.g., MuleSoft), and modern cloud platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure, AWS).

Expertise in batch and real-time data integration, structured/unstructured data, and scalable data pipelines.

Strong skills in data modeling, data quality management, and documentation standards.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor s or Master s degree in Computer Science or related technology field.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CDMP, TOGAF, AWS/Azure Data Architect) are a plus.
