Job Description

The ATC is seeking an Electro-Optical Engineer Principal with broad range of expertise in the architecture, design, development, fabrication, AI&T, field-testing and field deployment of active optical sensor systems, solid state and fiber lasers/amplifiers and nonlinear optical systems and devices for ground, air, maritime and space application environments. We are looking for a strong technology leader for a multi-disciplinary active optical sensor design/development group for cutting edge, advanced Electro-Optical systems. This technical leadership role in optical sensing and laser technologies offers the opportunity to join a rapidly expanding and exceptionally talented group of scientists and engineers. You should have experience in the full lifecycle: architecture development, design and modeling, fabrication, AI&T, characterization, optimization and deployment of complete active optical systems and their components such as transceiver (transmitter, receiver, control, data acquisition and processing) lasers/amplifiers and frequency conversion devices, familiarity with current state-of-the-art in solid state & fiber lasers/amplifiers and nonlinear optical materials, and experience with the characterization and optimization of laser and nonlinear optical systems. Knowledge of related passive & active optical remote sensing technologies and their deployment and operation in space environments is required. Knowledge of coherent and direct detection laser radar, radiometry, Fourier/wave optics, beam propagation, and/or atmospheric sciences is desired.

Some of your responsibilities in this role will include the following:
Lead active optical sensor systems architecture development to address challenging missions for active electro-optical systems.
Be the technology lead for a high functioning multi-disciplinary, rapid development engineering team in active optical systems and advanced optical sensing
Grow and expand team capabilities to meet the demands of system, subsystem and component development for advanced EO system needs
Pursue and execute component (transmitter, receiver, beam control, electrical control/data acquisition/processing, and thermal management subsystems) development (internally and externally-funded) efforts for advanced EO programs
Multi-disciplinary Technology Leadership of systems and subsystems
Cost accounting Management (CAM) Leadership of systems and subsystems
Specification and selection of lasers and/or nonlinear optical technologies
Specification and selection of optical beam control and management technologies
Specification and selection of nonlinear optical systems and devices
Evaluation of predicted performance through computational modeling and analysis
Laboratory testing and experimental demonstration
Prototype development
System analysis and integration
Field demonstration
Operational deployment
Lead authorship for summary reports, oral presentations, and/or technical proposals.

We are looking for someone with a strong problem solving mindset: ability to develop creative solutions to difficult problems often requiring integration of conflicting and, at times, ambiguous or incomplete data on a fast-paced schedule. You should have the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex information, technical decisions, and issues to both highly technical and non-technical colleagues including customers, team members, and suppliers. We are also looking for the ability to build and maintain relationships, collaborate with others and manage interpersonal dynamics. You should be comfortable working in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment.

Basic Qualifications

1. Advanced degree in aerospace engineering, optical science or related degree program with knowledge of remote-sensing, optics, lasers and/or nonlinear optics
2. Must have the ability to obtain & maintain a TS/SCI security clearance
3. Minimum of 20 years of experience in the architecture, design, development of EO systems, subsystems and components
4. Minimum of 20 years of experience in the multi-disciplinary Technology Lead and/or CAM roles for the development, prototyping and testing of advanced passive and/or active EO systems at multiple technology readiness levels (TRL) maturity
5. Minimum of 10 years of experience in new business capture and /or program execution for advanced passive or active EO systems, including some of following: Proposal writing, customer/stakeholder briefings, program & technical baseline formation, program performance management, and / or oversight of complex EO system development through milestone gate reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, etc.)
6. Expertise in the architecting and design of active optical systems, including some of following: laser and nonlinear optical systems and devices, laser resonators, amplifiers, and parametric frequency converters.

Desired skills

1. Advanced degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, or related fields is strongly desired.
2. Technical management/oversight over the rapid development of complex EO system / subsystems / components from laboratory proof of concept through to TRL 8 for challenging environments.
3. Leading studies, strategy development and execution and results briefing to company senior management
4. Internal Research and Development (IRAD) planning and coordination to develop key technical discriminators
5. Familiarity with optical design and analysis software tools. Examples include Zemax, FRED, GLAD, Code-V and LASCAD.
6. Familiarity with laboratory development and modeling software tools (i.e. Matlab/Simulink, Labview, and Mathcad).
7. Knowledge of related laser-based remote sensing technologies (i.e. coherent and direct detection laser radar, radiometry, Fourier/wave optics, beam propagation, and/or atmospheric sciences, optical detection, signal/image processing).
8. Expertise in high-power ruggedized nanosecond-pulsed and continuous-wave solid state laser systems is desired.
9. Technical and/or programmatic leadership of laser and NLO hardware transition to high TRL (for terrestrial, airborne, and/or space applications).
10. Expertise in performance, opto-mechanical and thermal modeling and analysis of active optical subsystems such as lasers, optical parametric oscillators and optical parametric amplifiers, nonlinear optical frequency conversion.
