Leidos' Defense Systems, Sensor Systems Analysis & Engineering Portfolio, is seeking a Mid-level Infrared (IR) Sensor Systems Engineer to join our team for projects that involve the integration of IR sensor solutions. You will join a diverse team of junior-to-senior software developers, engineers, and scientists to help create unique solutions for complex problems. Our team solves important problems that make a difference and support our customers in the current and future defense of our nation; primarily in (but not limited to) the areas of sensor integration, testing, characterization, modeling, simulation, data analysis, and algorithm development for electro-optical/IR systems.

The ideal engineering candidate will also demonstrate experience in and/or enthusiasm toward developing a broader technical capability to support overlapping engineering and scientific disciplines with but a particular focus on analyzing data to solve complex problems.

The position requires excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated proficiency in sensor integration, sensor testing in lab environments, and programming. The candidate is expected to be a multi-disciplined engineer that can make a variety of technical contributions immediately. Candidates will be expected to support multiple tasks in parallel, productively contribute to a team environment, and communicate effectively to management, coworkers, and customers.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Working closely with a team of engineers and scientists to integrate EO/IR sensor systems. The candidate must understand the engineering requirements of the system and sensor subsystem and know the basics of IR sensor testing.
  • Must be driven and engaged in the work while simultaneously demonstrating high character, given that they will often be working on sensitive and unique problems which require a high degree of trust from our customers.
  • Candidate is also expected to be a problem solver with the ability to work and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team while being able to work in both Windows and Linux. Scripting and analysis experience is expected (MATLAB, Python, or equivalent).

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, optical engineering, engineering physics, software engineering, systems engineering, computer science, or an equivalent engineering or science degree with 4-8 years of experience in a related field.
  • Must be a resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to the Huntsville - North Alabama, AL, area.

Preferred Qualifications.
  • In addition to the qualifications listed above, the ideal candidate should be willing to take on greater roles and responsibilities in time such as task lead, team lead, and technical lead.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Recent stellar academic performance
  • Familiarity or interest in EO/IR phenomenology
  • Experience with image processing
  • Experience with systems engineering tools
  • Understanding of industrial/manufacturing practices.
