The pay range is $131,000.00 - $236,000.00
Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. These include labor markets and in some instances may include education, work experience and certifications. A role as a Director of Design Engineering - Automation means being at the heart of our perpetual reimagining. Your team is the think tank and laboratory for the innovative ideas that spark change throughout the Supply Chain. We are inventors, metrics masters, data geeks, testers, triers, course-correctors and askers of the all-important question "What if ... ?". This team influences processes, engineers the robotics and automation to support those processes, and activates solutions sustainably across the network. You should thrive on the challenge of identifying innovative new automation solutions, leveraging data to scope and baseline opportunities, identifying root causes, and creating metrics to assess recommended solutions.
In this role, the Director of Engineering will be instrumental in the design and development of the next generation material flow strategies for Target. This role will lead the technical teams and direction to enable successful deployments and launches of automation supply chain capabilities, technologies and processes. These solutions will involve many types of automation including robotics, sortation and conveyance, controls integration, vision systems, and process development and optimization. The key to success in this position is having a strong & innovative approach to problem solving, great technical leadership, excellent communication, flexibility, and a self-motivated working style with attention to detail. This role will require you to be hands-on in experimentation and will be expected to do design/development of highly scalable systems while leading technical engineering teams. You are a thought leader and mentor for internal and external technical talent and actively contribute to the external technical community. You will determine the right solutions to deliver business value keeping in mind availability, scalability and reliability of solution and design/develop complex solutions. You will be responsible for building and managing a team of high caliber engineers. You will manage cross-functional technical dependencies, and you'll contribute to the technical community in forums/groups.

Key Responsibilities:
- Identify & develop improvement initiatives, evaluate new technologies and solutions against KPIs, create roll-out strategies and deploy them across an organization with cross functional partnerships
- Develop and use material flow procedures & diagrams, identifying and
eliminating bottlenecks, creating operational flow processes based on theory
of constraints, etc. - Develop an understanding and point of view of current industry trends, capabilities and strategies within the warehouse and retail automation space
- Review and edit engineering layouts and drawings using AutoCAD and/or
solid modeling software - Structure complex & ambiguous projects into meaningful components and
create a plan to solve them - Lead by example to develop your team as strong data and issue based problem solvers and structured communicators to deliver clear, concise documentation to drive alignment across teams, partners, vendors, and approval from executive management.
- Demonstrate expertise in effective communication and clear, concise documentation of design recommendations to drive alignment across internal and external stakeholders, and to get approval from executive leadership.
- Highlight and appropriately escalate risks while proposing potential solutions to enable effective decision making in the best interest of the enterprise.
- Establish clear performance expectations and coach Team Members to ensure their performance plans meet organizational objectives.
About you:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering (Preferred: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation or Robotics); Master's degree is a strong plus
- 10+ years of experience in robotics, electronics, industrial controls, automations and machine redesign or computer systems integration with automated equipment
- 5+ years of managing teams with a strong track record of delivery for cross-functional products
- Understanding of current automation/robotics landscape for retail warehousing operations
- Experience with material flow strategies, material handling and dynamic manufacturing/supply chain systems
- Expert problem solver with an ability to structure complex & ambiguous projects into meaningful components and create a plan to solve them
- Proven project/program management of complex automated implementations
- Proven ability in data-driven, analytical approaches to problem solving
- Excellent ability to communicate with all levels of leadership, technical and operating personnel combined with effective interpersonal skills to promote a unified vision
- Ability to review and edit engineering layouts and drawings using AutoCAD and/or solid modeling software; visualization/animation experience a plus
- Testing and simulation techniques, functional requirements of system/equipment to be automated, writing and executing test plans with documentation of results
- Ability to travel 25% globally to interact with internal and external business and technical leaders
