This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As Manager for Crew and Payload Interfaces, you will lead and build a hardworking team of diverse engineers and designers responsible for delivering the hardware that enables habitation, logistics, and payload interfaces on the MK2-Crew Lunar Lander.

You will be both a technical oversight to the design and success of these programs, as well as an advocate for the career growth of your direct reports. You will develop verifiable requirements and use-cases, including those critical to the crew interface, in conjunction with affected systems and internal stakeholders. You will lead the execution through concept of operations, prototyping, preliminary design, detailed design, Human in the Loop testing, analysis, procurement, manufacture, qualification and acceptance test, and verification. You will lead your team through interfacing with systems and stakeholders throughout the life cycle of the hardware development, developing technical solutions and executing development, testing, and analysis to support technology maturation, trade studies, and down-selects.

As a Team Manager reporting to the Integrated Product Team Senior Manager, you will be responsible for cultivating an evolving, rightsized workforce; overseeing performance, merits, and promotions; shepherding team members' careers through coaching, opportunity matching, and technical development; benchmarking their work standards and tools with other Blue Origin business units and with industry trends; and assuring that the Team's work products meet domain quality standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical oversight and technical leadership of the highest caliber:
    • Exemplify conduct for your team members.
    • Lead hardware development efforts including design/build/test cycles, and documentation and reporting.
    • Apply expertise to develop cutting edge and cost-effective solutions for Blue Origin missions.
    • Identify and trade solutions, support vehicle-level trade studies, provide expert recommendations and technical feasibility evaluation.
    • Oversee design and analyses ranging from scoping calculations to detailed assessments of technologies and systems.
    • Support and oversee supplier management activities.
  • Supply people, processes, and tools needed to meet the demand signals specified by program needs to meet the program schedule. Negotiate time commitments, and resolve conflicts with the respective product managers, and support recruiting and hiring efforts.
  • Manage your direct reports' professional development (e.g., hiring, performance reviews, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations) and coach them on performance.
    • Ensure staff are properly trained, including to operate within the Blue Origin safety culture
    • Obtain performance feedback for employees from their peers they have worked for in the evaluation period.
    • Proactively counsel your employees' career growth, by understanding their unique goals, capabilities, and experience and matching against current and future needs.
    • Facilitate development opportunities for your employees to align with Lunar Permanence needs and advance the capabilities of the community of practice.
    • Conduct team meetings and provide flow-down communications from upper management and relevant announcements.
  • Organize the team and assure access to necessary resources is maintained:
    • Set and prioritize team goals and develop and maintain team performance metrics.
    • Manage the team's labor and non-labor budget.
    • Coordinate access to key technical resources, software, models, and analysis tools needed, and processes for capturing staff best practices.
    • Coordinate and integrate with like capability groups and expertise across the company.


Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or software engineering or related engineering field.
  • 7+ years of technical experience in the design and analysis of human-interfacing hardware, preferably focused on spacecraft, in-space stages, and/or landers, and 2+ years leading a team and/or project
  • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design through operations support)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop trades and metrics-driven data for quick decision-making and streamlined execution.
  • Experience with hardware development life cycle
  • Familiarity and experience with hands-on prototyping and design, mockup design and evaluation, engineering development units and test methods
  • Experience managing and working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
  • History of developing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion


Desired:
  • M.S. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience with spacecraft crew systems technologies and architectures.
  • Ability to transition between analysis and design to build and test activities.
  • Strong project management and team leadership skills, including the ability to utilize tools to manage schedule and technical requirements adherence and verification.


Compensation Range for:
WA applicants is $146,352.00-$204,891.75
