Job Description:

As a contract GIS Analyst, you will play a critical technical role in creating, maintaining, and supporting essential geospatial infrastructure data for Norfolk Southern Railroad. This position directly supports Engineering and corporate initiatives, including Positive Train Control (PTC) compliance, by preparing and assembling geospatial data and conducting regular inventory analyses such as mileage, counts, and measurements across the rail network.

You will utilize your railroad knowledge and GIS expertise to interpret track geometrics and ensure spatial data integrity, quality control, and proper database compliance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be essential to support the Enterprise GIS program and generate value through innovative GIS applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create, modify, and perform quality control on critical geospatial infrastructure data for company-wide use.
  • Prepare geospatial data supporting PTC Subdivision Files and ensure compliance with database and data model standards.
  • Perform topology corrections and geometric modifications using GIS software as part of quality assurance.
  • Conduct quality control checks on data produced by CADD technicians and promote accepted change sets.
  • Collaborate with various departments to leverage GIS technical skills toward Enterprise GIS goals.
  • Assist the Sr. Geospatial Data Analyst with additional GIS tasks as required.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through effective use of GIS technology.

Required Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency in GIS software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Intermediate decision-making and project management capabilities
  • Practical knowledge of railroad operations and track geometrics preferred

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor s Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Preferred: Graduate Degree (optional)
