Scope of Position:
The Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for providing mechanical and electrical support for the design, installation, start-up, and debugging of manufacturing or research process equipment. This includes working with a multi-functional team (mechanical, electrical, controls, facilities, IT, operations, etc.) The work will involve the application and understanding of principles encompassed in control systems, instrumentation, motion systems/robotics, programming, mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and machine design used for the design, production, operation, and use of all types of machinery.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and implement mechatronic systems and solutions to improve automation and manufacturing processes
Coordinate the task and work plan from team members to meet the customer's schedule
Provide hands-on input and insight into equipment installation and troubleshooting
Design and integrate PLC/PC based process and automation controls
Verify equipment build and layout against drawings
Ensure safe work practices
Update drawings and equipment documentation
Prepare and deliver detailed project documentation, technical reports, and presentations to stakeholders, including progress updates and project outcomes
Well-versed in basic electrical engineering principles
Skilled with the use of design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor)
Skilled with the use of control software (Rockwell - Studio 5000, Omron, or Beckhoff)
Understanding of electrical panel layouts, schematics, system testing, and safe troubleshooting techniques
Experience with using scientific methods to execute and analyze experiments
Ability to collaborate and work with diverse teams (skills, gender, culture, race, etc.)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work with minimal direction
Basic project management skills (e.g., scoping, budgeting, timelines, etc.)
Capable of multitasking
Experience with mechanical equipment design, installation, start-up, and debugging in a research environment
Experience with hands-on wiring, including but not limited to cabinet building, field wiring, labeling, implementing over-current protection, and shielding for sensitive circuits
Familiarity with IEC 61131-3 programming standards
Experience with programming languages such as C, C++, Python, and MATLAB
Soft Skills:
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Experience in preparing and delivering presentations and reports
Ability to work closely with stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure their needs are met
Experience in managing relationships with vendors, suppliers, and other external partners
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team
Travel Requirements:
Travel is possible for 1-week trips or shorter, depending on customer needs
Expected to be on-site in the office during the week.
Travel to a supplier or vendor may be required for equipment check-out, part purchasing/modification, or as needed
Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechatronics or Mechanical/Electrical Technology, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or related degree with a focus on automation and control systems engineering with, a minimum of 3 years' industry experience
Work Schedule:
40 hours per week. Typically, M-F, 8-5:00
