Electrical Engineer

Lightmatter is a photonic computer company that is redefining what computers and human beings are capable of by building the engines that will drive discoveries and progress sustainably. With modern human progress relying heavily on computers, the world has hit a dead end with traditional transistors, and the prospect of constantly building data centers is an environmental nightmare. Lightmatter builds chips for artificial intelligence computing. Our architecture leverages the unique properties of light to enable a fast and efficient compute platform. We created a solution in photonic computing: using photons instead of electrons to take advantage of their higher bandwidth.

If you're a collaborative engineer who has a passion for innovation, solving challenging technical problems and doing impactful work like building the world's first optical computers, consider joining the team at Lightmatter!

An electrical engineer with Lightmatter can expect to be challenged and pushed to grow as an engineer. You'll collaborate with the Systems, Mechanical, and Packaging Engineering team on a daily basis and have exposure to the Analog, Digital, and Photonic components to our novel photonic compute solution. You will be responsible for delivering board and system solutions creating state of the art machine learning/artificial intelligence platforms. Join the Lightmatter Systems team to impact our product offerings and join the coolest company.

Responsibilities
  • Electrical design of power, memory, and interconnect circuits, working in both the analog and digital domains
  • Identify electrical and optical components to fit the application based on specifications provided by the IC and photonics engineering teams
  • Starting from fundamental concepts and system considerations, develop conceptual design, physical modeling, and simulation of chip-modules and systems
  • Oversee and review PCB Layout designs, providing complete and detailed electrical constraint rules
  • Ensure the board and system is manufacturable to the latest technologies with high yield and robustness
  • Qualification of chip and system electrical properties
  • Perform electrical, thermal, and mechanical evaluation of packaging solutions
  • CAD modeling, design, and vendor sourcing for board and system components
  • Build prototype assemblies and perform laboratory validation of boards and systems
  • Support contract manufacturing during prototype and production phase to resolve any issues
  • Manage and work with component vendors and other supply partners
  • Research new components, processes, and technologies to meet product goals
  • Review system interfaces (power and I/O) of the Lightmatter IC in design and advise on system design impacts and issues

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering with at least 6 years of relevant experience, or a PhD in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of experience.
  • Proficient in schematic design using Cadence, Mentor, or Altium tool set (Altium preferred)
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management tools, e.g. Oracle Agile, Arena, or Omnify PLM, with an understanding of BOM and ECO management
  • 5+ years of experience performing lab experiments and debugging; essential skills include the ability to non-intrusively instrument circuit components for analysis and troubleshooting
  • Experience in working with thermal solutions for integrated circuits and their board-level systems

Preferred Qualifications
  • Has taken at least five products from concept through prototype/production phase
  • Familiar with 3D Mechanical CAD tools, e.g. Solidworks or AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing and design processes
  • Knowledge of integrated circuit layout and basic architecture
  • Has shown the ability to work cooperatively with software/firmware engineers to isolate and solve issues

Benefits
  • Comprehensive Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • 401k matching
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Generous Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Paid Family Leave
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
  • Flexible, hybrid workplace model
  • Stock Option Plan
