Job Summary
The Research Cybersecurity Specialist is critical role in upholding the security and integrity of research data at Florida International University. This position is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and enhancing cybersecurity measures to protect research data and systems from potential threats and vulnerabilities. The position will collaborate with researchers, faculty, and administrative staff to develop and enforce policies, procedures, and best practices related to cybersecurity compliance in alignment with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Develops and implements cybersecurity compliance frameworks, policies, and procedures tailored to the unique needs of research activities within the university.
- Conducts regular assessments and audits of research data systems, networks, and applications to identify and mitigate cybersecurity risks.
- Provides guidance and support to researchers and faculty on cybersecurity best practices, data protection techniques, and compliance requirements.
- Collaborates with internal stakeholders, including IT departments, research offices, and academic units, to ensure alignment of cybersecurity initiatives with institutional goals and priorities.
- Collaborates with researchers and faculty members to assess the security implications of their projects and provide tailored cybersecurity guidance and support.
- Develops and implements robust security policies, procedures, and protocols to protect research data, intellectual property, and other critical assets.
- Stays current with emerging cybersecurity threats, trends and technologies relevant to research environments and recommend proactive measures to enhance security posture.
- Leads cybersecurity training and awareness programs for research personnel to promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness and accountability.
- Serves as a liaison with regulatory agencies, funding organizations, and external partners on cybersecurity compliance matters related to research activities.
- Stays abreast of regulatory changes, industry standards, and best practices in cybersecurity compliance, and incorporate relevant updates into institutional policies and procedures.
- Participates in incident response activities, including investigation, analysis, and resolution of cybersecurity incidents impacting research data and systems.
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and implements technical solutions and controls to address cybersecurity compliance requirements effectively.
- Performs essential duties during any emergencies, such as hurricanes, storms and/or any other University emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during University emergency closings with appropriate notification by department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field with eight (8) years of experience in related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Cybersecurity Certification such as Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC).
- Experience with risk assessment methodologies, vulnerability management, and security incident response procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of cybersecurity principles, standards, and regulations, such as NIST, HIPAA, FERPA, and CMMC.
- Experience with security monitoring, cloud security, network security, governance, risk and compliance.
- Experience managing and creating document libraries for policies, standards, guidelines and procedures.
