You will lead the electrical architecture definition, manage system-level risk, and guide a multidisciplinary team to deliver cutting-edge solutions for our customers.
What You'll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities)
Electrical Systems Leadership & Architecture
- Provide Technical Leadership for a multidisciplinary system team (Optical, Mechanical, Focal Plane, Power, Thermal, RF, and Software), including external suppliers, to define and create state-of-the-art electronics solutions.
- Define Key Solutions involving electro-optical imaging, Systems-on-Chip (SoCs), mechanism control, high-precision thermal conditioning, payload control, mission data processing, and power distribution (including DC-DC converter designs).
- Drive Architectural Decisions by composing objective, quantifiable trade studies that incorporate heritage designs, new technologies, and supplier capabilities.
- Maintain System Integrity by performing system-level modeling, simulation, and analysis to ensure end-to-end electrical compatibility, functional allocations, and margins across the entire system.
- Lead System Engineering Efforts including requirements derivation, allocation, and flow-down using tools like DOORs and MBSE.
Design, Development, and Anomaly Resolution
- Lead Hardware Anomaly Resolution at the system level for both engineering development and flight hardware, determining root cause and implementing corrective actions.
- Maintain Hands-on Involvement in every aspect of the design, development, production, and test phases.
- Identify and Mitigate technical risks early in the design lifecycle.
- Develop Electronics that meet the stringent quality and reliability standards required for NASA, NOAA, DoD, and classified customers.
- Present analysis, findings, and design progress to internal management and customers throughout all program phases (Proposal, SRR, PDR, CDR, IV&V).
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree (BS) or higher in Engineering or a related technical field, plus 6 or more years of related experience. (A higher-level degree may substitute for two years of experience).
- Detailed Design Expertise: Demonstrated, detailed design experience in analog and digital circuits, FPGA development, PCB Layout, and electronics packaging.
- Systems Thinking: Proven ability to act as a systems thinker, applying systems thinking skills to solve complex problems and drive constructive change.
- Documentation Skills: Working knowledge of creating interface and design documentation, including functional block diagrams, PCB design, layout, and fabrication documentation.
- Problem-Solving: Robust problem-solving, decision-making, and closure skills (dedication to close open technical issues, manage cost/schedule/risk).
- Communication: Strong presentation skills and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
- Work Environment: Ability to work effectively within an on-site environment (3+ days per week) and within multi-disciplinary teams.
Highly Desired Qualifications (Preferred Skills)
- Domain Expertise: Experience in creating and delivering aerospace and/or space-based electronics systems and subsystems.
- Full Lifecycle Experience: Experience through the entire system lifecycle, from concept and design to production, integration, test, launch, and operation support.
- Specialized Technical Competence in:
- Focal Plane/Sensors: ROIC photodetector arrays and interface electronics.
- Motion Control: Motor drives (3 phase, voice coils, steppers) with associated feedback (resolvers, encoders).
- Power/EMI: DC-DC conversion, power distribution, harnessing, strong grounding knowledge, and EMI/EMC background.
- Control: FPGA closed-loop control and general analog circuitry for thermal control/telemetry.
- Analytical Experience: Experience with high-reliability design standards, including Worst-Case Analysis (WCA) and Part Stress Analysis.
