Description
The AWS Cloud Principal Engineer is a pivotal hands-on technology expert responsible for the secure deployment and maintenance of Tyler Public Safety 911 systems in the AWS cloud.
This role will collaborate closely with cross-functional product and engineering leadership to transform deployment models into next-generation CI/CD solutions. Expertise in building custom DevOps solutions for modern applications in AWS and GitHub CI/CD is essential.
The Principal Engineer will be comfortable creating and maintaining Terraform modules, deploying and supporting applications on EC2 instances, AWS container services, and Serverless Frameworks. This position requires both strategic thinking and hands-on leadership.

Responsibilities:
- Partner with engineering leadership to define and execute our multi-year cloud roadmap.
- Assist in migrating monolithic applications and legacy systems to scalable, cloud-native architectures.
- Support and advise product teams on cloud design patterns, cost optimizations and best practices.
- Champion a DevOps culture and help upskill teams in automation, observability, and reliability practices.
- Build self-service tools and templates to accelerate adoption of cloud patterns.
- Provide subject matter expertise on cloud networking, including VPC design, peering, VPNs and private connectivity.
- Collaborate with security and compliance teams to ensure our cloud posture meets regulatory and organizational standards.
- Be a go-to resource for product teams navigating complex cloud decisions.
- Serve as a mentor and force multiplier for engineers working across cloud infrastructure.
- Develop documentation of new processes and procedures
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science engineering or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure roles, with at least 2 in principal-level or staff-level role.
- Deep expertise in AWS (or similar cloud provider) with hands-on experience in cloud architecture and services.
- Strong knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Proficient with CI/CD tools and pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD).
- Experience with implementing DR, HA and cost-optimized architectures.
- Solid understanding of networking principals, VPNs, VPCs, Routing, and firewalls in cloud environments.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems across systems and design holistic solutions.
- Capacity to identify and prioritize tasks in alignment with organizational needs.
- AWS Certified Solution Architect - Associate or Professional certification is a plus.
