Job Description
The Systems Administrator resolves computer-related help requests and audiovisual issues for Virginia Tech's User Experience and Engagement unit. This position provides solutions by independently resolving problems or escalating the issue for final resolution. Duties include installing, configuring, troubleshooting, monitoring, administering, and upgrading all client systems, including Windows and MacOS operating systems. Performs increasing systems administration duties such as but not limited to supporting backup and disaster recovery processes, ensuring security, and provisioning resources for Faculty, Staff, and students.
Required Qualifications
- Pertinent certifications such as CompTIA Security +, Jamf, Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate, with CompTIA A+ certification, or equivalent being required.
- Strong knowledge and experience administering and supporting desktop computing and ability to troubleshoot all desktop operating systems (Windows, MacOS), hardware, applications, and peripherals in a logical and systematic manner.
- Functional knowledge of fundamental Internet applications and protocols, SNMP, SSH, SCP, HTTP(S), and DHCP.
- Must be adept at troubleshooting various computer hardware and peripherals such as motherboards, CPUs, printers, desktop video conferencing equipment, etc.
- Ability to troubleshoot and configure smartphones in an enterprise environment.
- Strong knowledge and experience working with audio/visual and multimedia equipment.
- Ability to interface with end users over the telephone, via email, or in person to effectively communicate problem status and resolutions.
- Good interpersonal, customer support, communication, and technical writing skills.
- Self-starter with ability to manage multiple simultaneous tasks and projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and/or pertinent technical certification and/or proven advanced desktop support and/or systems administration experience.
- Experience supporting Linux operating system.
